Firstly......I'm new to this forum so don't shoot me down in flames if this is an old thread or I'm posting to the wrong area. :D

Having worked in the field of pc repairs for a while I'm often asked why manufacturers don't use 2.5" HDD's in desktop machines. I've never been able to give an answer to that question as for the life of me I can't see why they don't. When you look at laptop drives now, you see more and more that they have anti-shock technology, three year warranties, capacities matching those of desktop HDD's etc so clearly are robust enough to last just as long. Is there something that I'm overlooking? Other than perhaps having to rig up a different mounting bracket is there any fathomable reason why we couldn't use 2.5" drives instead of 3.5".

Pros:
smaller and lighter
quieter
less power consumption
less heat and easier to cool anyway
equal capacities
easy connectivity (sata)

Cons:
umm............anyone?

I actually agree with you on this one...can't think of cons for now.

Speed is still an issue; Most desktop drives are going to be quicker unless the 2.5inch is tuned specially for speed (like Velociraptor)

Even the WD Scorpio Blacks are not as fast as the Desktop Blacks.

Taking it a step further, why don't they use 1.8"?

Answer:
1. Price
2. Capacity
3. Speed
