Sharing is the key. I agree with Scott Moulton.
Gee, once I told my girlfreind I would like to make videos on how to solve computer problems and she said:
"you crazy, so nobody will call you again and pay you".

She has a point, but honestly all the solutions are online already, you just have to know how to find them and know how to apply those methods to a REAL project. Thats experience. I think if you share a lot of information, eventually it will put you in a higher category as the other businesses because you demonstrate to have the know how, and eventualy it will turn into more business, because you will have access to those customers that need to know how knowledgable you are before they hire you (AKA other businesses).

Once again I think sharing is the key to get more business, not to lose it.

Another example is...when I have a car problem. If my mechanic has a lot of info on his website and actually tells me how to do things, I'm STILL not going to do it myself because I don't have the skills...but I will definitely call THAT mechanic because I know he has the skills to fix my problem.

Makes sense?

this will encourage home DIY, which will surely fail for the most part. You obviously do not have a lot of experience in this industry, or you would know the difficulties in most DR cases. Even if head swap (for example) is good, proper equipment is often needed to overcome damaged surfaces, bad blocks, head alignment, eccentricity etc.

Scott moulton should know this, but then again when you make a killing out of 'training', does data loss of home DIYers matter? I guess not

At least so much porn and warez will be destroyed... and HDD manufacturers are happy to sell new units. It's perfect.

I took Scotts class live and his Distance learning Class. I have done many thousands of data recoveries over the years when there was something over my head I would just send it out to a professional. Scott’s class helped me greatly and is a good all around way to get better knowledge quickly and yes experience is the only thing that pays off. Scott never says from his class you will know everything and be able to go right into the business as far as I know. Some of the people on this site seem to be one sided and love to flame the noob. But those guys are so raw with people that I don’t see them ever doing anything to help anyone but hanging out late at night with nothing better to do than getting nasty with the latest poster. I would not send my drives to any of them if they were to pay me to do that. Take Scotts class it is great you will learn allot. Don't expect to be able to go right into the data recovery business from that though. If you do you will get flamed much worse than this site could ever hurt you buy life when it blows up in your face. There is nothing that can replace hard work and experience.

Said "x" and the absolute contrary of "x" .
For that money you can get the industry standard tools with their nice manuals and support, and be able to put hands on real DR. You can get tons of broken HDDs for few cents to work on , and in a reasonable time get decent results (I mean months or few years depending on what you do) : this is a real pay off.
Instead of buying generic info, you can buy specific info. AND experts and professionals are not jealous of their know-how. But you have to join the club, first

P.S: strangely, as the general opinion of the seasoned pros here is uniform, people always come here. Many opinions about courses are biased (from the posters not the pros) and a common opinion between us is that many freshly registered posters may be really just one man or two... there must be a reson, but this maybe involve sociology not technology. Life is fun because the world is varied.

This is not the case. If a job is beyond DIY repair, then advice on DIY is irrelevant and in some cases not given. This is not a selfish act, it is infact indirectly helping as no advice = no DIY = safe data. It doesnt matter how many DR courses you have attended, or how many 'accredited' certificates you have, if you do not have the experience for the job, then it should not be attempted.

Another problem is the perception that a single DR course over several days only will make somebody an expert. The come the demands, and the attitude and this is why people get 'flamed'.

Your observation is right on the money.

HDD Guru is a place where arrogance is a virtue, and altruism is ridiculed and despised.

Essentially, this forum is an elitist clique, whereas others are egalitarian communities.

That's right. You better share all the info you have as soon as someone asks, or you'll get sent to the gulag.
