Hi to all,

I am doing a raid 0 ( 2 x 500gb ) seagate 7200.10 with motor stuck in both drives.

had made / resolve the motor problem and,

at the moment one disk is cloned ( from 100.xxx.xxx to 850.xxx.xxx ), the frist sectors can not read it.

cloning the second disk but also the frist sectors can not read it.

Anyone have try this hard job ?

them will mount the array with just the data from sector 100.xxx.xxx from both drives.

did you swap platters or free motor? strange that you cannot read first 100 million sectors. Have you tried imaging from 80 million, 70 million etc?

Sometimes after platter swap, first few million sectors can be hard to read but never 100 million. You might want to adjust them.

I am assuming this is because of eccentricity/small misalignment that causes the outer tracks to become more difficult to read? Makes sense.

I would image all of the good sectors, then make adjustment, try missed sectors again, make adjustment, etc.

Sense you have already gotten rest of sectors, if those become unreadable doesn't matter now, just need to the outer tracks to become readable now (and of course make sure firmware remains readable)

swap platters,

sorry maybe i explain not well,

the data start on the 100 million to 850 million.

yes i can read that sectors i think from 40, 50, 60 million are empty no data there.

can not read the first sector's.

what i notice is that the heads where stuck in that area maybe something happen there.

and when i create a loader from one disk some tracks give error.

That looks very close to misalignment output.

Lots of $$ (servo)

The outer tracks are more difficult for the heads to reach track following with, because of RRO/NRRO etc; and PLO delay.

The middle and inner (not as much the inner) tracks are easier for the heads to follow, even if there is some small misalignments.

My only guess would be to try to realign the platters to read the outer tracks better while still being able to read SA.

Since you have already imaged middle and inner tracks if you lose the ability to read those areas now, you are OK (assuming you have made a backup of your image)

so you don't have much to lose, and only the data you have not gotten to gain.

The tricky part is actually making it work

Thanks Russwinters,

yes i notice that is some misslaigment issue, but seagate are not too much sensitive on that.

Also i could clone on this one the H4, H3 ( almost full)

now i am try the others heads, using a loader.

one thing strange in this case, i had made severall platter swap, and i could read the first sectors, but this two disk i am not able to do it at the momment.

will try harder ;)

Thanks to all,

Change heads again, and the same happen.

Have Cloned H3 H4 from 100 to 800.xxx.xxx

Attachment:
DE-ST.jpg
DE-ST.jpg [ 209.99 KiB | Viewed 7681 times ]

I am using a loader to get ID with the drive.
Now i check it that i can edit the sectores from H0, H1, H2, H5 and i get the data well, if i go FF or BF with the mouse i can clone it, but the problem is that i have to be with a click mouse and the cursor have to be on the right place.

This will take a lot of time, if i try to read that sectores with the DE the disk start BSY and it lost readiness.

Anyone have worked a job like this one ?

any info will be great,

Regards
ZeBong

You have to fiddle with the platters to solve this.

If I may ask, how exactly does one "fiddle with the platters" to deal with this issue? Are we talking extraction and re-insertion of the platter assembly?

lol, not a step by step guide. I wouldn't ever ask (nor expect) such a thing from people on this forum. It was more a question of curiosity/clarification. I wasn't asking for specifics. I sense that perhaps this falls into the area of "that's for me to know and you to figure out", which is fine.

You are correct. Get yourself a spare drive and get fiddling!
