Drive spins up, clicks a little and spins down. Unusual for a seagate. On one occasion I was able to access the SA, read the modules, except APP which could not be read. However all of the other times the drive spins down after a few seconds. If I crtl + z then the drive stays busy and will not spin down or click.

Does any one have a clue for this one? I don't think it is just the CE log error?

No obvious damage to the top platter, from what I can see of the rest they look good.

You have bad heads , if drive is above 40gb then :

Drive is ST3120026A / Alpine (U9).
On the one attempt the drive got to SA I have modules 1 through 10 except number 7 (APP).
I wasn't sure if the (P)PATA Reset suggested that the heads were OK?

I fixed the 'stuff' error. Now I get the following in the cmd. I think it's fairly safe to assume now that it is the heads?

No, I just have an associate whom deals with this kind of failure very well. I am aware of my own abilities and where they start and where they end. That is what keeps the recovery rate high rather than taking a cavalier approach and attempting procedures that would risk a customer's data. Whatever you might think I do aim to be responsible when conducting my work.

sorry my mistake, given your credentials, experience and your website, I was under the impression you could deal with this yourself.

I would love to develop my data recovery skills further, and after a recent move I am in a better position to install facilities to take things on. However, the big dependent factor, as I am sure it is for many for us, is time. My work load is roughly split 50% data recovery, 25% ICT support for companies whose servers/RAID arrays I have recovered. Moreover, as my appellation might suggest I am also an active researcher having to deal with gaining publications which makes up the remainder of my working time. Trying to find a balance is tough. Leisure time, what's that?!
If of course you are willing to offer training to me at reasonable rates, well I would be more than happy to accept. I don't pretend to know everything, that's why I ask questions here sometimes, I just keep trying to learn a little bit more each time.
