Did you open the Hard Disk itself, or do you simply mean you removed Disk from enclosure?

I think he means, he opened a top lid of the drive.

Seems like it. Pro service is your only option, and now that the disk is opened it is going to be even more expensive

This is what I thought, and expected. Seems like the normal think to do if your a newbie with a defective disk these days.

Spindle seizure. You're going to need pro service on this one I'm afraid and yes, opening the lid (if that is what you did) was not good. Hopefully the damage was minimal but a DR firm will probably charge you more now I'm afraid.

BlackSt is going over the top. Contaminants in the air are a problem when u opening a drive outside the clean room enviroment , but u are not screwed just yet. The top platter got the most and can be cleaned. Not by u mind , at this point u need to seek pro help m8. No spin = siezed spindle or heads grabing the platter. Siezed spindle will need a platter swap wich is in no way DIY. Some ppl had success removing sticking heads , but i would strongly advise against it. Way to many things can go wrong. At this point just make sure ur drive is closed and take it to a pro shop for a quote. Sry man .

So opening disk outside clean room and contaminating platters is sufficient to require additional work from a pro, and incurring extra costs? So BlackST is correct and in fact not going over the top?

Simple fact is each and every time a user opens his disk, regardless of whether DIY repair was or was not attempted, a DR pro has no idea what has already been done (Im sure you will agree that not all customers are eager to tell the complete truth either so you always have to cover all possibilities), and as a result more work is involved which = more costs to cover this work.

At least with cases where warranty seals are still intact we know exactly what we are dealing with.

While in this case the op may not be 'screwed' the cost of a pro service has already increased, and as DIY is pretty much impossible for this problem, opening the cover definately does not help.

In my experience if a disk has been opened you will have to part with some cash even if you don't get any data.

If the disk has not been opened, most pros will perform the recovery on a no data no fee basis (unless extremely complex)

@alexii

decontaminating platters is not an easy task. If you opened the drive in a normal environment you have lots of particles flying, if a simple "TAKE A LOOK" ACTION was done, expect hair, skin particle, dandruff . One particle is like a small boulder on your car windscreen when driving in comparison with head/disk rotation.
Of course it is possible to decontaminate a platter or even an entire drive, but why do it if unnecessary ? It is not a 10$ surcharge operation, it is much much more.

It's not the 1st time I see "foreign matter" on drives :mrgreen:

Hi, a seized spindle needs specal tooling and clean environment to do the process adequately. The drive is not hopeless at this moment i think, but any bad action, even from professionals not working with the right technique will render it unrecoverable easily.
Prepare to spend some hundred euros if u need those bits back.
