My HD seems to be corrupt and does not allow me to boot up Windows XP. I used a Ubuntu 10.04 Live CD to boot into the system and back up my files, but when I tried to install Ubuntu as my operating system, an Input/Output error occured, and did not allow me to install the OS. The HD now are not viewable any more on the Live CD. I tried wiping the HD, using Linux programs, but this does not work either. Is there something I can do to restore my HD? I dont need to recover anything, just get it working as a new HD so I can use my computer once again. Thanks

Q: To me I do not understand why you want to fix a drive that is failing and having all these problems. As cheap as HDD are in America would it not be best to just buy a new one and go on? To me if it was my data and my time it is a lot easier to junk this drive RMA if possible, get a new one and go on. Sounds like you have a back up of all your data so buy a new HDD, install the OS and reinstall your data and then you are worry free. Or you can try and check out the problem in your HDD using MHDD and see what it says to you on this one. But for me cheaper, less problems change it out and move on and forget about it.

Agree, take this as a lesson and move on. Don't use this drive again.

Use the HD manufacturer's tools, eg Seagate's SeaTools or WD's Data Lifeguard, to test the drive. You may need to do this anyway, as part of the RMA procedure.
