Hello pinkST,
I find your problem interesting. Do you think this forum would care if you started dropping hints? Not knowing anyting about the HTS542516K9A300 except that it is a 160Gb drive i would only venture a guess. if the drive spins up with power only attached it probably is initializing. When SATA cable is connected one of two things may be happening. 1) Heads begin looking for data to supply OS. Servo fails to find requested track and firmware tries to recalibrate. 2) Hardware issues are causing drive to over travel sector area.

Just guessing, awaiting your clue.

I think it begins to click when SATA is connected regardless of OS. So the problem is the disk itself :)

This drive has TFC and Bulk Data Encryption. Could it have lost the KEY?
