Hi guys,

Long story short my dell c400 wont boot up and looks like it's a hard drive problem, was intending on getting a replacement hard drive however i dont know much about jumpers,

THe laptop only accepts 1 hard drive in it so i guess this must mean it must be set to master.

Can you help me identifiy what physically the jumper is?
Ive read on other sites long details about what jumpers are but as for identifying them all i ever see are diagrams with black marks where it says the jumper is but i dont see it on my hard disk.

Is the jumper a black plastic tab on a connector?

For simplicity ive taken photo of my hard drive that isnt working properly, can you help me identify where the jumper is? i know its on the connector somewhere



I thought that black top might be it but it does not remove itself, seems attached to the black board

There is nothing to set on this. Take off the adaptor cable that covers your ide port on the other drive, move it to this one, install it in the craddle and then go from there. It is an IDE drive and the adaptor will do all you need on this one

Your drive is configured as master, ie no jumpers. The master/slave/CS pins are the 4 pins at the end of the connector.

If your new drive is a different model, make sure it is also configured as master.

Yes laptop drives accept 1 HDD inside of it. Considering you laptop is an IDE when you take the old one out you will see it screwed to a craddle or mounting bracket for the inside of the laptop. On the end of the IDE there is a black connector that covers all the pins on the IDE drive. This has to be removed and put on your new HDD so it can install correctly into the laptop. You wil lsee when you take out the old one and put this one in. You will also see on the old HDD there is no jumpers set on this at all. Follow the configuration on the drive you remove and it will work fine.
