Buy tools and start learning how to use them. You need the correct tools to work in SA and the knowledge aquired to do this work. If not out source your drives and learn how to do this one.

Listen CAREFULLY :

Assuming the problem is firmware related (have doubts about it, but can be) :

- You need specialized EQUIPMENT (HW+SW) to work with firmware that cost in the 10'000 $ range + support fee AND know what to do (NOBODY will guide you troughout the repair process).
- You want a firmware : firmware is stored partly on the microcomputer on the circuit board, but the most relevant part is RECORDED ON THE PLATTERS inside the disk. Moreover, in the microcomputer there are UNIQUE parameters stored (UNIQUE for YOUR drive). It is not an Ipod or a cell phone so you can "flash" firmware on it.
You need the specialized equipment above + the know how to deal with it.
- Finally, you can "update" or "send" at user level a firmware if the drive is responding : your drive is NOT doing it so forget it.

The truth : your drive can have firmware corruption, but also a physical problem (I think it is more probably this the cause of the failure).

Truth #2 : the "support" forums and 95% of internet stuff fall into the "blind leading the blind" category : end users with zero or limited knowledge or at last copy/paste from other sources, often unchecked. Enthusiasm and good will is not enough when you need a solution. Of course WD people won't disclose the proprietary info about drive internals. Neither are we going to do it.

There are things that can be done at end-user level, other "maybe" with increasing risk of destroying data, other definitely not.

What you need : proper diagnose and pro intervention, or forget about data and carry on. I know it hurts. Usually, a backup can avoid all this and everything is limited to a replacement of the failed HDD.

P.S. if you were here, for a fraction of the cost of new similar HDD - assuming there is only FW problem - I can fix the drive and make it work again like brand new BUT WITH ALL DATA INSIDE COMPLETELY AND DEFINITIVELY DESTROYED (if you want a complete recovery the cost is definitely higher).

thanks for all the offers, allow me to ask one question please

wd offered a firmware upgrade on their site for wdxxxxys models (YSUpgrade.zip) the install instruction was software from DOS only - is it possible to find something like that for my model or that wont work ?

Yes but it is completely useless in your case - problem is elsewhere + drive not responsive. Good luck.

Exactly so.... "UPGRADE" firmware, not "REPAIR".... It has to be working in the first place for an upgrade to be performed.
