Pardon me exhuming this thread, but i recently fried the same model drive due to a silly mistake assembling a power cable.
I got a little lucky and could actually reactivate it by removing the fried TVS;
i plan to continue using the drive until it finally dies (as a a means of data transportation or tertiary backup);
that's why i wish to replace the TVS with a new one.

Now the problem is that the imprint on the fried one is no longer readable and i don't have much of an idea which kind of TVS i should be looking to buy.

Did by chance anyone 'witness' the type used on this PCB?

thanks

Just take the TVS from another drive. Ensure it is the correct 12v or 5v and you SHOULD be ok. BlackST actually gave you some good advise. Hard drives are dirt cheap, but what is on them is supposedly worth something. Looking at the posts related to this family of drives, I would suggest you use it for target practice.

thanks phishin_ca;
i'm well aware of the 'doomed' status of the drive, next stop almond grinder;
i just don't want to lack this awesome tvs-'fuse' that indeed saved the drive (while seeing how long it's gonna last);

Something that maybe of interest!

An alternative data recovery method is to do a live board swap, sounds risky, but if you have damaged your rom chip, you have no other choice.

This is an excellent source of information.

why are you posting this shit? Just because you have changed a rom chip doesnt give you guru status. This method won't recover your data if rom chip has been mishandled or lost.

HDD Spaz, you didn't even know where the rom chip was located on the PCB so close your mouth!

This method is not guaranteed, but I believe the info on the platters is only checked agains't the rom chip on boot up, sure the ECC table will be incorrect, but this can be reset quite easily with software, and you will not need to reset that if you are able to grab all of your files.

The guy at myharddrivedied.com is an industry expert, and it does say 25% success rate.

I'm not trying to be a Guru, just trying to help!

So what do you suggest if the rom is fucked??? Mr "No It All"

You clearly have no knowledge of the subject. This is clear in your post. Posts like that cause people to lose data. I have never seen corrupt rom on a seagate, or Seagate rom which is not readable via pcb or external reader in 7 years of data recovery. What I have seen is people attempting DIY data recovery who manage to lose the ROM.

I think you are speaking of hot swap. Won't work for this drive. Maybe you should have read about data shifts etc before posting.

Industry expert my arse. If he is such an industry expert how come he is recommending SD plattor swap tool which doesn't even work on the most common drives with seized motors.

This guy is only famous because he decided to leak some 'secrets', secrets which were not discovered by him, might have been because his own data recovery business was failing.

If ROM is fucked you can still revive the drive and get data back but it requires time and to know the GUTS of the drive. But assuming you have everything else intact, it is possible !! :mrgreen:

P.S. good or bad, to talk about people is always "advertising". Please... please...

pezzodefero, your 12V TVS diode is shorted. I suspect that the SMOOTH chip may have also suffered some damage, perhaps not visible.

If you replace the PCB, you should also be prepared to transplant the 8-pin serial EEPROM chip in the top LH corner, above the 20-pin preamp connection.

If you purchase a PCB from http://www.onepcbsolution.com/, the ROM transfer service will cost you $10, but you will need to send your damaged PCB to China. Otherwise, if you are not adept at soldering, your local TV/AV repair shop should be able to do it for you.

Good luck.
