I am interested in this topic. But I don't have any experience .I am going to start the business of data recovery .I hope that I can get more tips on heads exchange from this forum.

I have experience with head changing.
But I think that I could not help you on so big distance :-).
I think you can buy some drives and try...

Hi all, I do not have experience in Heads Exchange but I have some infos that can help:
1- You will need to buy or ask to someone to make some specific screwsdrivers for the drivers, if you already saw has a screw upside the seal and after you take it you are gonna see another and is for this that you have to had a specific screw; maybe I can send you (TheBeginner) some picture of them, if you want of course.
2- You will need ( I know that you know that but... ) a Cleanning Roon Class 100.
2- I also think tha some kind of support can help a lot, I mean a tool to help you to take the head off, I also have some pictures to this.
3- And them I think that Dmitry's advice is one very important thing, you will need to work with a couple models before you do the right thing.

I think that some advice to know when the head is good and when it is burned will be very wellcome.

Hello guys!
I have the Class 100 cleaning room; i have several drives for this job; I don't have any tool for heads exchange and I don't know what is the alghorintm for minimal damages of the drive!

Hi everybody:
I have the tools, I have the clean area, and also I have several drives. But when I change the heads from one to other the drive stop working. Always the sympthons after the head change are the same. The head assembly goes from the inner to the outside of the platter once and another. What I am doing wrong ??

Hi Carlos, how are you ? I would like to ask you to read all the messages here and some messages that is at the russian forum, this is to you see what happens here.
If you need assistance like this that you are asking you possible will not will be able to get it here, sorry.
Remember my email ?, the one about the tool and the professional ? ok.
I'm not able to change heads the only thing that I know about this matter is what I read.

Hi Jose. Yes of course that I remember your email. And I am following your advices. I have learned a lot of since our last email, but I know that I have a long way to walk yet.
And now a question, how can you difference a burned head and a normal head ?

Hi,All,
I had purchased the tool Data Extractor from ACELAB.
for the knocking drives(The heads inside the drives keep knocking the position limiter), I practiced exchanging the head assembly in order to make the drive getting ready. We can succeed to exchange the head assembly for low capacities drives like 2.1GB ,3.2 Gb. But for the high capacities drives like 20Gb and above. It is very difficult to get succeeded. After exchange the head assembly, the heads in the drives always knock the head position limiter.
Does anybody give me some advice ?

Hi Carlos, ok - I can only tell you what I know and is not much and maybe can not be the right or the best thing, but you can have it for free. You turn your hard disk on and it won't recognizes - You have a few things to see, with the heads is something like that - You have to try to hear what is happens inside the hard disk, the hard disk that is ok has some noises and movements that you can hear and you also can fell them when you put the hard disk on your hand, so you will need to pay atention in this things. And by comparison you will start your learnning.

To bennis ( and to you Carlos ) what I hear about the exchange heads is that after you change the heads comes the most hard and important job - the heads adjustment , and this is a the secret of the professionals that does this job, and has a few only that does this with perfection.
I'm saying this because everytime that I read or hear about heads repair, I know that in every 100 cases is about 10 even less that works, and this is not my goal, my goal in my jobs is exactly the oposite in a 100 jobs I have to make 90.
So here in my company we only does what we know that we have this numbers, the others jobs we learn and learn until we see that they will give us the same percentage - 9 in 10.
I have this objetive in my life, and everything that I does since I start my professional life is based in this goal.

But I don't know how can you make any adjustment in the heads, becouse the assembly only has a position in the drive chassis.

Hi Carlos, you still have dificult with english. Read what I wrote, please.
You can look for companys tha does exchange heads in Europe, and also for a tool that can help you maybe companys lyke TOYO or Tektronic or LaCroyx has some tool that can help you with the Heads adjustments.

I have made some tests with head exchange with several capacity drives and always the same result. If I swap the heads between two equal drives, most of the times the head knocks the position limiter, but If I put back the original heads in the drive, always work. Casuality ?? I can't find any adjustment.

Model , Revision of this hdd must be writeln, if no - on your question no one didn't answer.....

Hi Carlos, I'm seeing that you don't understand what he said to you, so here we go: each hard disk model and manufactur has its only way to ajusts an also its only apects ,so if you can say put here model and all infos about the hard disk it is possible that you can recive some tips.

Hi Jose: Sorry for my english. I know that is not as good as yours, but I'm still learning.

About the drives. I'm working with these drives:

Seagate ST34311A. Firmware 6.01. p/n: 9M9002-730
Seagate ST320414A. Firmware 3.28. p/n: 9R3004-301
Seagate ST380021A. Firmware 3.18. p/n: 9T6006-301

I have a couple of each. If I put the heads out of one of them and I put back the same heads to the same drive always work. But if I swap the heads, I have got it back to life only very few times.

A question for everybody.
Does exist a tool for putting the heads on the platters ? If you have a drive with a single platter and two heads, you can put the heads on place easily, but if you have a drive with more than one platter is really complicate, becouse you have to separate all the heads at the same time.
