Hey guys,

what would a complete data recovery laboratory contain? I mean what software, what hardware, supposedly money was less of an issue... I'm trying to make a project and figure out exactly what it should contain and it's hard for me since I'm a newbie, not in the IT field but definitely in the HDD data backup/recovery field and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I read about Atola Insight and SalvationData's products, is that all that one needs to handle ata/sata drives? What about flash sticks, or SSD? Or Raid setups? Or SCSI?

Maybe the topic is too large, please give me some pointers though, maybe you can tell me what you use in your laboratories, I would very very much appreciate it!!!!

Yours truly,
Ciprian

You can start here in search. Recommanded software, tools comparison, and things like this. Next you can search on Iternet and talk to the manufactures of the tools and see where you go from there. It is not a one answer question and to supply all needs research and what you want and what you are looking for. You can start off your budget with at least 30 thousands that is tools, material, clean room, and all that you are looking for. This can go up and this is just the starting of it all. I would expect to pay a lot more when you are done. Good luck on this one.

Thanks for your answer poehere! Can you give me more specifics? So you estimate 30k. Is that euro or $ ?

So I need a clean room, tools(hardware/software), material(what do you mean by that?).
What do you have in your lab? :p

Yours truly,
Ciprian

Yeah why not? Joking :)

Seriously now, I'm looking for like days on the internet and I really need your help guys... I mean I didn't find good info(maybe I'm dumb) about clean rooms. It's just that I'm inexperienced... How do I know what clean room do I need?

Also, do I need other types of electronic hardware? Like measuring tools, or microscopes or any other kind?

Perhaps you are looking at this from the wrong way. I think you should start from the ground up and develop your skills before you spend €€€ on facilities. A cleanroom and expensive equipment will not give you the skills to recover data from damaged drives.

Indeed CK, thanks for the answer. I was requested by my boss to make a budget for a complete data recovery laboratory, be it not the most exact in order to investigate the costs of entering the domain. So the skills are not yet developed and that's why I need the costs at the beginning and to see the big picture.

Then I guess you need to consider how many drives you propose to handle each month in order to realistically assess the costs involved. The amount of money you can spend is infinite, depends on how serious you are about it...

If you want to know the setup cost in this industry you need to start off with a comprehensive shopping list. Then you just price up each item.
So are you intending to offer the full range of services or just a selection?
I seem to remember there was a similar thread a couple of years ago but i can't find it.

Yes... BTW I was asked some time ago about similar scenario. Finally they gave up when they realized that they didn't have the most important thing : human resources. I was not available on "pay per use" basis neither could become their employee as I should have closed my business. Same for other people. All good companies I know are run by one or few people, with strong in-house competencies and a solid network of other trusted specialists for exchange.

No offense but if this is your job then I hope you have some better ideas about how to do it than just asking a random internet forum

Usually, the tools and equipment in use by a data recovery company have often been selected through a considerable investment in time and money, including wasted investments (on tools that don't work) over a several year interval. People like me consider this information to be proprietary.

Thus, I am not going to share that hard-won info with you simply because you asked. Sorry!

Let's say things as things are (beside what Jono said thet is 100000000% right) : you can have the latest tools and HW/SW complexes for diagnose and FW manipulation, the most fine hand tools and everything else, and do nothing.
What is needed, in THIS ORDER :

1) MANPOWER with....
2) ...know how (both 1 and 2 eventually together are readiliy available, only need to open a wallet)
3) TOOLS
4) NO FEAR FOR RISK (it's a business) AND FRUSTRATION.
5) LOVE what YOU DO.
