Dears all,

a dear friend of mine had a problem with an USB external Hard Disk from Packard Bell which decided to stop to work.

I checked that the Hard Disk is the one in the object and that it is not starting at all! I took one of my universal SATA adapter to check it but it was just lighting up the Power supply green LED and the Hard Disk red LED, for a duration of about 100ms and then off. After one second it tries again and repeats forever.

During this time I do not hear any sound about the motor so that I think it is not starting at all.

It seems to me that the problem is related to the power supply/motor.

Anybody knows if there is a possibility to repair it?

Thanks for any suggestion,

Carmine

I suggest that you remove the hard drive from the enclosure. Inspect the circuit board for any visible damage or smell. If there is nothing obvious, connect it to an adapter and see what happens. Correct me if you have already done this. If you have, post some pictures of the PCB or provide us with details of the hard drive (manufacturer/model) and hopefully we can provide you with some troubleshooting steps...

If your board is similar to the following, then check TVS diodes D3 and D4, and zero-ohm resistors R67 and R64 near the SATA power connector. Also examine the SMOOTH motor controller chip.

Dears all,

sorry for the delay. The attached picture is related to the printed circuit board.

Thanks for your co-operation.

Best wishes,

A pic of the component side would be better 8)
Please unscrew the pcb and take a picture of the other side.
