tags: ST380011A motor keeps on spin down and not more than 4 seconds later it does spin up againDear forum's friends
I have a strange issue on an Aspire 1710 notebook with its internal 3,5" ST380011A drive
First of all please note that the drive looks healthy, except but the issue I'll go to expose.
Drive motor continues to stop and quite immediatly restart, I've not been able to measure the time between cycles, let say that they happen while the notebook is not used... but since I started writing this thread is has been always on...
SMART start/stop count reports 87655 starts/stops

against 2125 power on (see attached screenshot)
The rest of the SMART values are green or grayed.
I first supposed it could be something failing with XP energy saving, but in the last period I've made it a dual boot notebook with ubuntu and also in ubuntu, the drive acts the same.
Inside the BIOS there is nothing about ACPI or power management.
My guess is they remain two possible causes:
- something written in the BIOS but not accessible (the notebook is a huge heavy 17" 10Kg weight computer with standard SDRAM dimms and a 3,5" standard drive, so may ACER have coded this to keep it cool?)
- one defect in the drive itself (buggy firmware?)
I didn't attempt to swap the drive for testing, do you think it is the only possibility or (maybe) have some of you already seen such issue?
I call it issue because it does really annoy to wait each spin up either if quite fast (only 5400rpms), additionally I feel that it is not such a good therapy to keep on spin down and spin up.
Now it stopped and within 3 or 4 seconds had spin up again....
Thank you for any suggestion
Robert
