I have a Lacie Big Disk Extreme+ 1tb
it failed to mount this morning.. the blue light works and the disk appears to spin in it's 'normally sounding way'.

but it wont show up on the computer...

If I open mac's System Profiler - under firewire bus it says
'Unknown Device'

I am not a harddrive expert, this looks bad to me :(
I've alot of clients recording projects on this drive

the green light on the power supply is on
and the blue light of the harddrive is on!.. the disks are spinning as normal

could this still be a power supply problem?

and put them into my MacPro /macbook do you think they would mount?

or would that be a really bad idea???

If the data is valuable, I suggest you seek some professional assistance at this point. Any DIY efforts may render it unrecoverable. There are some capable people in the UK and Southern Ireland who can help you.

if it would be me - id remove the hdd from the enclosure and connect it through another controller that i trust. This will eliminate possibility that ur LACIE controller is bad. Id listen carefully for clicks. Id listen if the drive sounds like its calibrating normally. Id connect it directly to the motherboard of a good working
computer to see if BIOS can detect it at all. There is a whole bunch of things that i would do =)

All this aside - give us the HDD model plz. There are some drives around that have inheritent issues.

Did you try a different interface - such as the USB then the Firewire 400 and/or firewire 800.
The product manual says it uses raid 0 - but its only a single disk enclosure..

It does not show up under the hard disc utility either does it? I was thinking that maybe doing a disc verify or disc repair might help if it lists on the left hand pane.

If it is spinning up (not the fans if it has any) but the hard drive and swapping the interfaces or even trying a different mac does not help; it is likely some serious failure to the hard drive. Pro would be the next step then.

Good luck

This model is usually 2 x 500GB configured as RAID0 or JBOD and HFS formatted.

Controllers in these enclosures tend to be faulty - particularly with power related issues. Beware of swapping drives into a new enclosure if configuration is different!!!

If the drives are raided - mark what drive was 1st what drive was 2.

@Alexii - What I meant was......if the original enclosure is configured as JBOD, don't put the drives into an enclosure that was configured as a mirror.

i uderstand m8 =) I was giving advice to the OP that if he does decide to open the enclosure and connect the drives directly to test if they ID at least - not to forget to mark their respective position in the raid =)
