Has anyone attempted to replace a HD (WD2500JB-******) in a Sony DHG-HDD250 or DHG-HDD500 DVR? I have tried practically every avenue without success. See post on the AV Science Forum: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthre ... st16430669
for additional information.

Sounds like it could be keyed to the serial number or somesuch. I reckon you could probably get a replacement working but Sony is notoriously locked down and proprietary... Since you've already tried a straight clone and that didn't work it wouldn't surprise me if it had to be (or report itself as  ) the same size, model, serial, etc.

The "problem" is elsewhere. I can't give more details here, sorry. Sony service can help, though.

Is there a utility or a service area editor that can change the serial number of the clone to the same number as the original? I have suspected that Sony has this info stored in the boot PROM but to find it would be a formidable task.

Well, it could be done with PC3K etc, but I think the cost would be prohibitive. Also BlackST is a smart guy, so if he says that's not it I would tend to believe him

Having said that, if you were super interested in changing serial & model number on some drive for science you could probably find someone here who would do it
