My WD MyBook died a while back, it went from clicking to no sound at all with only the light turning on and off. I finally got around to taking the hard drive out of its case, now I'm wondering what my next step should be. Should I try to mount it using a new case or is there something else I can try?

Also my old Mac PowerBook's motherboard died a couple years ago and I still have the hard drive from that. Since it's smaller I assume I'll need a different type of casing to retrieve that data. What should I be looking for?

Thanks!

A pro in your area.

(clicking was bad news, the fact that it stopped clicking too is really bad news - at least in terms of DIY)

When you say "no sound at all", do you hear the drive spin up? If not, does it attempt to spin up?

For your Mac Power book drive if there is no damage to this one except for the MB on it then you should be able to attach this one to a new USB enclosure not use if you will need SATA or IDE but you will find out when you take the driive out of the Power Book. Then you can look at this one via USB and see if you can read the drive and data on it.

The first one WD My Book clicking is normally a problem in heads on this one. What you can try to do is take it out of the enclosure and attach it direct to a MB and see if you can see it in the BIOS. If not and it is not spinning at all or making any noises at all then you have another problem on this drive.
