Does not spin. Is this a candidate for a board swap or is some other failure more likely?

Thank you.

No spin? No noises?
Have you checked the PCB for burned components?

No spin, no buzzing, clicking or seeking sounds. No visible to naked eye obviously burned components on the board.

Here you can check this one. I know Franc will love to post this one for you but considering it is on all of his posts you can go here and read this. I think this is the help you might be waiting for on this one.

Yes, not planning to be soldering parts and trying different fixes randomly, but for this particular drive if the circumstances indicated likely PCB issue or firmware, I am happy to pay for professional work or professionally made replacement parts.

Any specific thoughts on this particular make model and with the symptoms I mention:

no spin, no sounds, no visible burned parts on either side of PCB.

You can test your pcb board. If you do not find a problem then it can or might be internal to the preamp on this one. You have the notes to do this. Other wise where are you located and we can offer you a pro in your area to look at the drive for you.

Where to test on this particular board?

Sorry, I'm a few minutes late. I was trying to get a life, but couldn't find a suitable donor.

Anyway, near the SATA power connector, in series with the +5V pins, you should find a 2 amp fuse with an "N" marking. Measure its resistance with a multimeter.

Beside the fuse are two components whose function I can't immediately discern. Can you zoom up on that area?

If you need to swap the board, I believe that you will need to transfer the chip at IC602 from patient to donor. Can you tell us its marking codes?

Just to satisfy my curiosity, can you also tell me the markings on the large chip at IC 301, and the part near C611, C612, and R613?

Zoom-in photo attached.

The fuse marked "S" which to me looks in line with the 5V pins appears to be blown. The next two above in the picture, which appear to be in-line, seem fine as do the others around the TI chip.

Reasonably safe to solder across for recovery purposes or really only replace? Replace with what?

Thanks.
IC602 =
mx
L093814
mx258005
VZNI-20G-L

IC301=

TLS2505

Near C611,12,R613=
KXP85

Sorry, the fuse is actually rated at 4A.

Littelfuse Surface Mount Fuses, N = 2A, S = 4A:
http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/48294.pdf

The two components immediately above it appear to be inductors. If so, then they should measure zero ohms.

Before soldering across the fuse, or replacing it, I would confirm that there is no short circuit between the load side of the fuse and ground.

As for the other parts ...

IC602 is a MX25L8005 Macronix 8Mbit serial flash memory:
http://www.macronix.com/QuickPlace/hq/P ... 05-2.3.pdf

IC301 (TLS2505) is the motor controller. It also controls the DC-DC converters.

KXPB5 (not KXP85) is a Tri-axis Accelerometer (shock sensor):
http://www.kionix.com/Product%20Sheets/ ... 0Brief.pdf
http://www.kionix.com/accelerometers/ac ... KXPB5.html

These URLs should help you identify the components:

OK, after confirming no short circuit and with soldering over fuse it spins up and down without any thunking or buzzing, but is not recognized.

Try to swap circuit board, and move IC602 to donor? Are there services that will do this for me?

I don't know enough to say whether the PCB can produce the symptoms you describe, but your local TV/AV repair shop should be able to transfer the chip for you.
