Hi guys,

My WD5000AAVS just died - no spin, just very quiet 3 clicks which are repeated 5 times and that's all.
Propably platter motor.
I checked PCB and it's OK.

I have donor drive (same type) and here goes my question.
May i implant my old platters to donor drive and swap pcb for my original one?
Can it work?
I'm not sure if there are not some other chips, which are bounded to PCB or firmware.

Thanks for your answers.

No no no no no, please do not even think of attempting this if you value your data.

It's most likely a head assembly failure. Platter swaps are the very last thing that should be done and definitely not in this case.

Further bad news is that this is not a DIY job, WD head swaps require vast experience to be successful. If your data is important, you need to seek pro help.

The drive is clicking 5 times and stopping is not your platters. This is a very common problem in WD drives now. If you try to move these platters you will for sure lose all your data and destroy a lot of your chance of ever getting it back. Like CK said to you this is not a DIY. You are right here the PCB board is not normally a problem on it unles there is a ROM problem and this can not be determined without the right tools to do this one. If you value your data do not even try this one.

I don't have much valuable data here so it doesn't much matter if I lose them.
I just wanted to try if it can be fixed this way.

poehere, you say that this is known problem.
Can you please describe it a little bit more? (What is mostly broken, what needs to be replaced, etc...)
How you are fixing it?

Well, even if your data is not valuable, if it's heads related problem, I wouldn't even bother trying to fix it.

I have tools to fix this problem with. If you do not have the tools then it is not an easy task to fix it. sometime it needs head change and sometime it does not. You have to know when it needs a head swap and what to do after you swap the heads on this one. You also have to know where to look to see if it is a head problem or not. It is hard to explain to you this one unles you have the tools to use and I think in your case you do not. Sorry
