i have a wd drive that recently failed (wd5000-aakb-pcb-failure-t18208.html)
and i started to look at the smart data of my other wd drive that is still working (WD5000 AAkb)
i have look at the smart data from three different programs and they all report back different things

All went well until I plugged the drive in.

None of the numbers are irrelevant to drive health, otherwise the drive [and the SMART spec] wouldn't bother recording them Some parameters have a more direct link to liklihood of imminent drive failure than others, as guru has mentioned.


While it would be possible to go through each value and make comments, the short version is that IMHO everything related to the drive itself looks OK currently.

But be aware - SMART does not predict every failure; only some, slowly degrading failure modes trigger the SMART thresholds and give you enough warning to do something about it. From various studies IIRC less than 20% of drive failures (and sometimes much less than that) were predicted with enough time to take any action (e.g. enough warning for a RAID system to clone that drive before failure). That sort of prediction rate fits with my experience too - you can't rely on waiting for SMART to tell you about a drive problem, before the drive fails; it just gives useful warning in some cases.
