Please help my 160gb maxtor drive has failed and in windows CHKDSK about 30% of sectors show as unreadable the disk contains all the family photo's so the data is valuable....

i have run diagnostic software and they either fail or it says it would take 1000's of hrs to complete repair cycle
also drive reports temp of over 80 deg c even when cold
so i think my best option is to copy everything to a new drive which i have and then try the repair
can someone recomend software that would copy as best it could the whole drive to another without stopping on errors
i need to get it right first time as i am thinking of freezing the drive
i have looked on google and cant find anything that fits my needs...!
so i thought i would ask the experts (thats you :D )
Thanks in advance for any replies

DON'T freeze the drive! Please.

You can try ddrescue in Linux to mirror your drive. But, if your data is valuable to you at all, send it to pcimage for a diagnostic first. If his price is too high, then continue to try your own things. If you use data recovery as a last option, you will most certainly find that you will be paying a lot more for to get your data back.

Should be not too expensive right now, if you don't tamper with it any more.

If you kill the drive completely expect a cost of 10x what it would be now, these are hideous drives IMHO.

As Luke says DO NOT FREEZE IT.
