Your drive appears to have a stiction fault. See the following thread, but heed the warnings.

You can also search this forum for "percussive maintenance". There are lots of success stories.

Thanks a lot for your interest, I want to say that the sound at the beginning is coming from an electric push-button switch.
I searched a bit some say it's the smooth chip, I measured the voltages on the PCB as described in some posts, all seem to be fine except the readings of the power going to the spindle motor.
any clues would be much appreciated.

Voltage going to the motor is derived three phase. So a scope ought to help.

Motor windings should show the same resistance readings.

Thanks alot Jono for the info, unfortunately I don't have such an equipment,
I tried to replace the smooth chip, from another PCB, it wasn't for a similar model, but the chip matched
(L6283 1.3) , I triple checked after soldering to see if there are any shorted pins , I powered the PCB, the chip was so hot & started to smoke I removed it & put the old one back, it got so hot & smoked too
would it be bad soldering?, or a faulty chip, Did the PCB turn unusable now!, how do I check the other components to assess the damage & see if it's worth another try.

another novice question, do SMD resistors of small values act as a wire in continuity test of a digital multimeter ?
there were two resistors on the PCB R120 & R050

R120 and R050 indicate 0.120 and 0.050 ohms, respectively.

The "R" is a decimal point.

So, yes, a DMM would see these resistors as shorts.

If you let out the magic smoke, the drive will not work again. If the parts just below the Smooth IC get too hot to touch, there is a good chance your preamp is cooked, too.

The motor winding(s) may be shorted, but that's not very common.

What should you do next? Send it to a pro if you want your data. Keep a fire extinguisher handy if you don't ...

I went to buy a PCB, I asked about the price & made the decision to let the pro handle it
Thanks to God it works, it a has the same number at the back, but the year 2006 not 2005, he even didn't swap the eeprom,
no need for the fire extinguisher Thanks Jono :)

now I'm facing a problem with another WD 160G Sata, it's works normally, doesn't make any noise
windows boots normally, but after a few minutes it causes the PC to hang, I tried connecting it to my laptop using
a Sata to USB converter but the same symptoms are still there !
