I really hope someone can help me with my hdd failure. It was sudden and without warning.

This 640GB is a WD6400AAKS-75A7B0 DCM:HANNHV2MA, it was installed in a USB enclosure.

Have tried different power source, but still:
- not detectable in BIOS
- no spinup
- very soft clicking sounds heard (odd to hear clicks when hdd is not spinning)

I also measured with a meter and found no short between 5V & Gnd or 12V & Gnd.

Appreciate any help or advice from gurus here.

I recorded the clicking sound, it is very soft, have to put my ears right above the hdd to hear it.

Please guys can you have a listen and tell me what you think:

Should I be looking for a board to swap? Or is there any other tests I can do to narrow it down?

It does sound like clicks a bit. In this event ur initial assessment of the drive not spining is incorrect. If the drive will not spin - the heads will not move. So if the drive clicks and spins - then there is a little whiny sound there that is kinds scary... Sounds like the slider is skimming the surface of the platter. All in all make another recording , as hiqh quality as u can preferably a video of you turning it on.
It does not sound good atm...

This is another higher bit recording with volume nomalised to make it louder but sorry I just can't remove the background electrical noise.

I believe it is not spinning because if I hold it in hand and power on, there is zero vibration and no feeling of the usual torque when motor starts. That's why I find it very odd. Hopefully you guys can shed more light onto it. Thanks for responding.

Maybe spindle seizure or head stuck to the platter.

Mike this is a good enough recording , however it sounds to me like a standard clicking drive. Platters will spin in that situation. Cant really help more without holding the drive.

I can't believe it I got my hdd working! Saved all my files!

It was a youtube video that helped - did a few gentle frisbee-like twists, power-on, and it spin right up.

Hope this helps anyone in similar situation.
