If anyone can help a noob:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB
Board#100327114
S/N 9QFOMHOT
ST 3250820A
P/N 9BJO3E - 300
Firmware 3.AAC
Date Code 07184 Site Code TK

Was used as an external to watch movies, tv shows. It literally started to smoke. The only true square chip on the board is burnt. It says SMOOTH (100369972) on it, located @SE corner if the plug/ports are @ 12 o'clock. Was running well prior to small smoke show. Now won't spin or anything. Would like to try to replace the board. Any chance of this? Is an older drive (3 or 4yrs I think).

TIA - a shot in the dark.

This vendor offers a PCB for US$40, including shipping:
http://www.onepcbsolution.com/seagate-s ... -4196.html

You will need to transfer the 8-pin serial flash memory chip to your donor. This chip stores unique, drive specific information. It is located at the top RH corner of the MCU.

The above vendor offers a firmware transfer service for $10.

Thanks - will pursue this. Could save a lot of time... if nothing else was destroyed in the smoke show. :) Cheers

And if it doesn't work, a song can always help feeling "a little better"...

:serenade:

THE PLATTERS (nomen omen) : SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES - HDDGURU REMIX

They asked me how I knew
my know-how was true
Oh, I of course replied
Something here inside cannot be denied

They said someday you'll find
All who ask are blind
Oh, when your drive's on fire
You must realize
Smoke gets in your eyes

So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt my advice
Yet today your data has flown away
You're without your porn

Now laughing guys deride
Tears you can not hide
Oh, so we smile and say
When a hard drive dies
Smoke gets in your eyes
Smoke gets in your eyes

:D
