Hi experts,

I have a Seagate 7200.11 Barracuda 1TB HDD that was part of a FreeAgent Desktop USB External.

A few days ago the drive stopped being recognized by Windows.

The drive will spin up, make that 'click" noise, and sounds fine, but it will not recognize itself at all.

I tried it on Win7, WinXp, and MAC OSx, nothing. The drive does not get recognized at all.

I took it out of the enclosure and tried it on a Vantec Nexstar HDD USB Dock, same results.

I put it into the SATA on a desktop PC and the BIOS will not recognize the HDD there, either.

What are my next potential steps? Send to pro?

What is the firmware version of the HD? Some 7200.11 drives are affected by the BSY bug. If yours is one of these, then there is an easy DIY fix.

Thanks for the quick replies.

The serial isn't part of the affected groups...not sure it's BSY bug, but if it is, I do not have the time or skill necessary to perform an attempted repair.

Any recommendations on a US-based recovery pro?

Many users have reported that Seagate's serial number checker is inaccurate. The firmware version, eg SD15, is a better indicator. Before opting for a professional service, check whether Seagate will recover your data for free.
