Have a WD 10EACS 1TB drive that cycles up on power on, hits a certain RPM and then cycles down and stops. Wondering if replacing the PCB will save it. If so, where would I get a new PCB? PCB is from FoxConn. Number below barcode 2081-701474-600 XC 4H09 0PQD K 0002320 8322

Agree this is not a PCB issue on this one. It is an internal problem in these drives and needs proper diagnostice to correct this problem and fix it. This will not help you at all to swap the PCB.

Thanks guys....so it is potentially fixable? I've got everything else backed up elsewhere. Just hated to toss the drive if there was a fix. Where would you suggest I take it/send it? I'm in Las Vegas.

Try to check on this one for RMA. You might get a new one I think it could be under warrenty. Check their website on this one.

It can not be fixed that easily.

99% certainly a physical head issue with this drive, which is difficult even for some "pros"

So unless you have important data on it and willing to pay ~$1000+ for recovery then RMA it or toss it in the trash.

Sorry it's not what you wanna hear, but that's the truth on this particular beast :-(

Thanks folks....yeah I figured it was toast. Finally just pulled it apart just to watch it. Never took one apart before. Provides a stark reminder of just how fragile that medium is and how easily it can go bad. It's why I have 2 physical back up HDDs and burn the really important irreplaceable stuff to Cds. Not worry free there either but at least no moving parts.

Sell the board on eBay.

Attach the VCM magnet to a broom handle and use it to find lost screws, springs, etc.

Use the platters as geeky beer coasters.
