i sent the HDD for a free diagnosis at a data recovery co.

heres what they said...

It would appear that your drive has entered a “locked” mode and therefore inaccessible, clicking continuously.

The locking is usually caused by media issues (bad sectors) and the firmware then “locks” to prevent further damage, it could also be down to corrupt smart or defect list(s).

This is not the same thing as the publicised “firmware bug” which affected drives of FW version SD15, DE12 and MX15 (yours is SD33), where the drive spins up and sounds normal (yours clicks).

The price for recovery of this drive would be £249 + VAT which would include a USB hard drive with your data on, and shipping of the data drive.

Of course, if we are unsuccessful there would be no charge.

.....so, do you guys think me carrying out the 'BSY error fix is pointless..and that i should just try and get them to do it (for the £250?) :?

You wont find any cheaper. I would rather take that than risking to mess it up.

Best case, the terminal solution works and you save some money.
Most likely case, the terminal solution does not work and accomplishes nothing.
Worst case, the terminal solution causes some other problem and your case is now more difficult / more expensive.

You already have the necessary equipment, so at least get a terminal report from the drive, but don't write anything to the drive.

ok guys ive performed the fix as per listed here and now the drive is spinning more normally than before...

it loaded the drivers and said it was installed and the device was working properly..

still not being seen in My Computer though... so into disk management next....

now then, although its now telling me in disk management that the drive is 'unknown' and 'Not initialized' this is strange as its obviously not a new disk...it ghas my data on it. is it ok to go ahead and initialize? it says something of partioning which worries me that it might overwrite my data or am i being a jack a** worrying there?!

Corky :o

See here for the downloads: http://hddguru.com/software/2005.10.02-MHDD/

(Note that the BIOS setting for the SATA controller(s) needs to be set to IDE/compatibility mode, not AHCI, for MHDD to recognise the attached SATA devices.)

BTW, was it the 7200.11 "BSY fix" which you applied? Do you have a copy of the drive terminal output from before / during / after whatever procedure you followed?

yes i am attempting the BSY fix, as it appears to be the symptoms I'm getting..the problem im getting though is actually powering up my HDD in order to contact with hyper terminal...so far nothing.

Earlier you said:

And your latest update is:

So it's not clear what you have actually done and what you have not yet done, but are attempting to do. :(

As you saw earlier in the thread, you were advised that there were risks in applying that "BSY fix", since your symptoms are not the typical ones for that issue, and some of the members suggested that you supplied the terminal output before doing anything. You might get more advice if you are very clear about what you have done, and what you are only attempting, but have not yet actually done.

Along with several of the other earlier comments from other members, I politely disagree that there has been enough evidence provided so far in this thread (e.g. terminal output in the original state) to confirm your hypothesis.

yeah thanks vulcan..im in a mess with all this.....ive got all the cables and the adaptor for the BSY fix...as i was told it wouldnt mess the data just to find out through hyperterminal in the first instance what the error commands are...my probelm right now is that i cant power the HDD in order to get the error commands...its all set up here in front of me as we speak.

im sorry for the confusion.
