I had one of our network techs ask me "Why do you use WD drives to give the client their data back when you complain about them so much?". My response naturally was"because they are cheap". Just curious, no more.

If needed data can be accomodated on optical media I give DVD / BLUERAY, or tape, or another disk at customer choice. I suggest Samsung for Hdd.

Quite often I find the customer brings an external USB 2.5" drive to transfer the data to, or I supply them with an external USB 2.5" drive at cost price. This last one was only for a 500MB PST file, so a CD was big enough.

I can only remember once or twice that the customer had brought their own. I have been tacking the cost of a disk with enough capacity. I do the DVD/BluRay at times but it is not that common really.

I just buy the cheapest 2.5" SATA drives I can find (usually end-of-line stuff), and stick them in a USB caddy.

Here clients supply me with the disk or they bring one to pick up their data on it. If they ask me to buy them a drive I will do this one but normally I get them a Samsung or Hitachi from here and not the cheapest one I can find.

This is only a personal opinion, but I think the way you present your work back to your customer says a lot about you as a company. If a drive is needed then I only stock retail externals with warranty. I have thought about the stock drive with caddy option, mainly for ease of transfer and speed, but I have decided to stick with Retail boxed drives, as I have had zero comebacks (currently getting through about 6 a week on average) with mainly WD Elements and Samsung, but if my customer has a preference, then I will order in or they can supply themselves.
