for some reason, i'm unable to reply on firefox. Yes i have once in the past with great success. This one crashed, but i was fortunate it didn't scratch the platters. Everything appears to be intact and good shape minus the head and I'm working in my home built clean room, hepa filters etc while working on the drive (Garages are good for something ). I've got all the tools i need, just needing a new head. Apparently this exact model is rare and expensive ($200)...but if I can find one close to it or exactly (a lot cheaper) i'd be a happy camper

I've got 1TB of data i'd like to recover (personal hard drive)

Otherwise i may have to bite the dust and get one on ebay...

How did you diagnose the heads as the failure?

No matter what other drive you have worked on in the past, this drive is a completely different story.

well the drive was knocked over followed by the usual head crashing on the platters. After powering down the drive and powering it back up once to check the drive, the usual clicking noise took over. After opening the drive i was not only able to see the head failing to read, but the obvious was before me. A bent and missing head. Good news it threw it out of the way...bad news the head is gone. I examined the platters and there appears to be no apparent damage...but i'll know that later when reading it. I'll be most likely throwing it into a kernal mode and read by sector or other HD tools, pc3000 or ontracks recovery tools to extract what I can. So just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best, if not, i can live with the fact the data is gone...but can't hurt to try. Just needing to get a head.

Thanks CK. I do. I hear WD's are a whole different breed. It's not important if I lose the data...everything is replaceable at some point...but it would be very nice to get what I can back off.

Your post is unclear -- do you own or have access to a PC3000? If so, you should be able to specify parameters such as heads map, microjogs, etc.

I tend to concur with thatdellguy . . . something isn't adding up here . . .

access yes, joke no, and with one of the heads off, it won't do me much good for recovery without a new one. I'm not looking for a professional job...data isn't that important...just looking to find a head replacement.

Microjogs? Heads map? Date of drive's manufacture? DCM code?

Parts now are not so cheap and donor drives are not so cheap. So you might have to get one from ebay as you asid on this one. But if you do not care for your data then why invest the moeny into a donor drive that you have no change on changing these heads on. If you know about this drive you know that WD is the worst for head swaps. Plus on top of it if your head is gone it has to be somewhere inside that drive. Maybe you are not seeing it stuck somewhere. All in all you have done what you have done and now want a head for it. You have to purchase the entire drive to get one. Good luck on this.

poehere: def looking like the case. I mean i can handle losing it...but would really like to get it back...i can afford a few hundred for another drive...but anything above that is far out of my budget. If I had more to spend i certainly would.

PC3k will tell u the microjog parameters and the head map.

If the budget is few hundred USD, maybe - guessing and question ? - is there a valuable member of this forum at reach that can handle your case ? I think it is a good option.

There are plenty of these drives on the market. Shouldn't be a problem to get one.
