I just had this hard drive die on me. It was in a usb enclosure and it was not being detected, i removed it and plugged it in to a sata port. It makes some weird noise kind of from a game and is not booting. I tried it again in usb and nothing.

This is the 3rd drive of this model # that has died on me. I have already received my 2 replacements. Is samsung not the best?

Without having evidence as to exactly why all 3 drives have "died", it's impossible to know the causes (and any link between them), with certainty. The drive is not the only common factor, based on what you've said, so blaming the drives seems premature IMHO, unless you have extra evidence which you haven't stated yet?

No evidence. Dont know where i would get some from either. I bought 9 of them for use in xbox 360s. I also replaced the WD that was in my usb external passport case.

The other 2 just would not get recognized by the 360s after some use, tried them in other machines as well no boot. Thats the only evidence that i have.

I'm not doubting that the drives are now faulty - I'm just saying that without evidence of why they failed, then blaming Samsung (as your first comment suggested) seems premature, and might lead you to incorrect decisions - that's all.

That depends how much money it is worth to you to get more evidence, to try to understand what is causing the drives to fail, and also depends on whether you still have those other failed drives.

And you've had 3 fail from those 9 - yes? A failure rate of 33% is clearly excessive, but I don't hear of such high failure rates here from other Samsung users.

So you're saying that you've also had a WD drive fail? That is a bit less of a surprise. :)

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Fanless external enclosures, especially the plastic ones, are hotboxes. Could the drives have failed due to excessive temperatures?

Yes, exactly :) That was one of the potential common factors between the drives that I was thinking of, when I made my first comment, although the OP didn't give us that level of detail of how the drives had been used.

I dislike fanless enclosures, but at least some can be fitted with fans afterwards. :)

So you're saying it is impossible that they had their life shortened due to excessive heat, even though we don't have good details of exactly what their enclosures were etc. from the OP, because the HM drives never get too hot - is that it?

There are other common factors in the OP's situation as well, of course, but if you are able to state that those drives could never get too hot, in any enclosure, then that would be useful info. :)
