I'm glad to have found this forum where many sharp info are available!

While pluging my Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 60go HDD (IDE) - which contains all my backups - in a new computer, it got a short-circuit during 2sec - I immediately unplugged it. A little flame came out of this black box on the PCB and it was smelling burned plastic.

The disk is not recognized by the BIOS anymore.

Thinking the problem could then be only in the PCB, I tried to find another board and bought a disk of the same model, whose board was very likely in terms of shape and place of the components.
I have just realised with this post that they might not be totally similar.

Whereas with the burned PCB the motor of the HDD was not even working, it now seems to run. But the disk makes some beeps. I recorded the scene (please put volume at max to hear something), and is still not recognized by the BIOS.

Do you know what does it mean ?
Would it be better with another PCB ?

That can mean a few things, like could be incompatible PCB, or damaged pre-amp or heads also, what I do believe that would be mostly the problem, as it's not uncommon to burn pre-amp when PCB gets burned.

So, I think it's case for a pro to do it and not a DIY solution.

Boards SEEM compatible, need to see the sticker with XXFYY of both boards to be 100% sure or better check microcode (but it is impossible on one as it is fried), but everything especially the "sound" makes think about fried headstack or servo gone. In this case it is game over for DIY.

P.S. on one of the two drives is there a "Refurbished to MAXTOR specifications" line on top label ?

The PCB sticker' codes are N2FYA on the original one, and M6FYA on the new one - if that's the good one i.e. a sticker located on the IDE connector.
It's true that between 2 beeps there is sometime a light sound similar to a scratch, which makes think to something going beyond the mere PCB

No such mention as "refurbished to Maxtor..." on the labels.

You could locate a PCB with same sticker code and try to swap it to be sure it's not a PCB issue, but I do really think that you'll spend your money and end up with the same results.

The 8-pin component at location U12 appears to be part of the -5V supply for the preamp.

Your local TV/AV repair shop should be able to replace it for you. That said, I don't know whether that will solve your problem. I'd also confirm the part number beforehand.

99% preamp is already gone as with another pcb the drive makes the "Maxtor sound". SMOOTH L72xx is 99% shot dead too. No TV/AV shop job.

Update :

I have checked some things as had a "quite similar" case.
A professional in your area with the appropriate tools should be able to diagnose EXACTLY if the problem is the preamplifier or something can still be done even if it is not simple.
This in order to avoid unnecessary expensive clean room work, but again a complete diagnose is needed.

If you saw flames shoot from the PCB, you have to send it the pros. God only knows what happened to any number of things: Smoke residue on the platters, preamp, melted plastic parts etc.

Sometimes PCB swaps on old Maxtors work out, but it's not common to the swap a PCB and have it work. Even if the PCB # is identical.
