Samsung HD13si - no power

I’m new to the forum and hope that you guys could help me out. I bought a USB Iomega external hard drive from CompUSA here in West Palm Beach, FL about 4 months ago. It was plugged into my home computer and never dropped, bumped, or damaged. Over the weekend, I noticed that the power light was not on. I was also not able to access the drive. The drive never made any noise or clicking in the past. Now I don’t hear it “spin up” or anything when plugged in. A guy friend of mine opened the plastic enclosure but didn’t see anything wrong. He just opened the plastic housing but did not touch anything on the hard drive. He used a test meter and said the power supply was good.

It’s a Samsung HD103SI (HDD P/N: HD103SI/Y). 1GB
numbers on board: trinity ROO, 8/16M Rev .06

I’ve read a bunch of posts on this forum and heard that ‘quassimodo’ is a local guy in Florida that might be able to help. I would be willing to follow any advice if replacing the board would work. I would just need your expert advice. 

Thank you,
SherryFL

AIUI, a straight board swap should be OK, if you can find a match.

If your friend with the meter is willing to take some measurements, I could help him narrow down the fault. Sometimes there is an easy DIY fix.

The first thing to do would be to test the resistances of the two TVS diodes near the SATA power connector.

quassimodo should be able to help you recover this drive if you need a professional. Before performing any DIY adventures, please keep in mind that "fzabkar" is not a DR expert.

Boy things get interesting around here without any diagnostic information except no power.

If your willing to do some basic troubleshooting and or have your friend assist we can help try to give you a better diagnosis and or fix.

If your data is worth $1000 give or take be aware anything you do could damage the drive if you don't perform it properly so don't RUSH it.

Do you have a good power supply handy (one that is working without any issues?
Do you have a multimeter to test a few components?

If you are willing to venture into the DIY area? IF so there is a few TVS Diodes that help protect the hard drive in an overvoltage situation and or power
surge. Search the forums here for TVS diodes and how to test them. Test the Power supply your using before the diodes.

If you can correctly identify the diodes you can remove them (temporarily) or replace them.
Once removed your drive is not protected so be warned, HAVE A KNOWN GOOD POWER SUPPLY when working with the board.

Do you have a scanner available? If so could you upload some pictures of the circuit board? The higher the quality the better.
