I have in a WD400BB (Silver I series according to SD manuals) with a burnt VCM IC. There is no visible EEPROM chip at U12, so the firmware is either in the MCU or all on the platters. Can anyone confirm if the firmware is partially embedded in the MCU and whether a straight donor board swap will work?

Simple, ROM is top left. SD tools will not help you if the PCB is dead. If this is a customers drive, sent it to a professional.

Cool, thanks man. I'll just have move the U2 chip over to a donor board. Totally forgot about U2! Hadn't seen one in a while.
