Hello all, i have an issue with my main 1TB data drive not spinning up any more and would really like the data back, the drive is

MDL: WD10EADS - 00L5B1

WWN: 50014EE1ACA81DDD
DATE: 17 SEP 2009
DCM: DHNNNT2MFN
LBA: 1953525168

upon removing the PCB (2060 - 701590 - 000) i noticed scorch marks on the SMOOTH chip and some discoloration on the 20 pins that seem to contact the drive itself
I was wondering if and how i could go about getting a replacement PCB and or firmware to match and if that would allow me to get my data back.

Thanks in advance

There's adaptive data embedded in MCU - you will need special gear ( tools ) to reprogram the new PCB.

If data is important then send it to nearlier pro.

good luck.

Nothing you can do yourself I'm afraid. Find a data recovery company to carry out the work. Hopefully it's just the PCB that's damaged, and not something more serious like a damaged preamp.

yea the problem i have is finding someone who can be trusted to do it, i'm new to this forum and have been doing a lot of research, just need to find a good trustworthy place or person to do it. im almost 100% certain its just the pcb due to the burnt motor control chip as the drive is pretty much brand new and hasnt been dropped or had anything but normal use.
im assuming it had a power surge or something since it died when i turned pc on.

Sure, from what you've described there is damage to the PCB. Sometimes the damage can spread to more than just the PCB which will require more than just a new PCB and adaptive data move - if the preamp is damaged it will require a head swap as well which will significantly add to the cost.

Consider checking your PSU as well to avoid future problems.

power supply cant really be the issue since i have 7 other hdds, 2 of the the same model just diff firmware i believe and this is the only one that has died, my pc is on 24/7 except for a power failure which i had the other night.
PC is surge protected also so i cant really put my finger on what caused the 1 drive to die. Never had a drive pop a chip before so i don't know.
Atm all im trying to do is source someone who can replace the pcb and do a firmware swap on my board and not charge me an arm and a leg and my first born child. I am not sure if anyone here in Australia does it, so i can only assume i will have to send the board elsewhere to get it done.
I just have to find a trustworthy person/company i guess, really after some recommendations.

I've not seen a data recovery technician on this forum from AUS since the time I've been on here so I can't recommend anyone I'm afraid. Maybe someone else can, I haven't been here that long. There's an active member here, fzakbar, who is from AUS and might know of somewhere, perhaps PM him. Or perhaps just shop around for quotes at some data recovery places in your area. Good luck.

can anyone recommend a place to either send my hdd to get repaired for a decent price or somewhere to get a new pcb and have the firmware transferred?

here are some pics of the pcb sorry they aren't the best, used crappy camera and light sucked.

seems as if the damage is opposite side to motor =\

I did try another board from a different working hdd that is the same model and made the same day but it has a different firmware or something and the drive still would not spin up or make any noise at all.
the last digits on the white sticker on each board were different though, not sure if it is what made the drive not spin.

2601-701590-J00 AD XC 7K10 1UV3 J 0004100 0104 is from dead drive

2601-701590-J00 AD XC 7K10 4JW9 4 0005100 0105 from working drive

but the boards seem to be identical just different serial numbers i'm guessing

Sorry to say but I bet the preamp chip is also damaged. That would mean at least a headstack swap in a clean room, head alignment, pcb firmware swap, image and then recovery. All that would require a pro and it will cost accordingly.

The only thing you can attempt yourself without any great risk is a straight pcb swap. If after the swap the drive spins then if you are lucky no further damage has taken place and you probably only require a firmware transfer (by a pro of course). If it dosn't spin then you might also have blown the replacement pcb. Thats pretty much it.

yea im thinking that the pre amp is dead, i tested by covering the j1 20 pins with tape and put a working board on the dead drive, it did spin up so i know its not the motor now. the problem now is finding a decent data recovery place that can fix and and have it not cost me an absolute fortune

Of course when I said firmware I really meant to say adaptive data.

If you are looking for a pro in your region then you might want to make contact with a member from this forum. His name is Zed and he is also located in Western Australia.
Good luck!
