The "best" software depends on the exact situation, and depends on exactly what you did - which you have not explained. :(

If you have not touched the data on the Maxtor 40GB drive after you copied it to the Hitachi 160GB drive, then you do not need to run data recovery software because the data would still be on the Maxtor 40GB drive - so there is obviously extra information which you have not told us :(

Depending on exactly how you "accidently del [your] 160gb hard parttions", the answer could be as simple as using Testdisk or "Partiton Find and Mount" software (or other similar software) to recover access to the deleted partitions on your 160GB disk.

IMHO it all depends on exactly what you did, and exactly why you are trying to use data recovery on a 40GB disk, as you have not explained about any probem with that disk... As always, a good diagnosis is important to choose the correct solution :)

For most types of DR the best apps tend to be r-studio and runtime software's getdataback in my opinion. Both have the capability to scan for files even if the filesystem is completely missing, and both can create/work from an image of the drive. Each has its strengths and weaknesses.

However if your problem is that you imaged the wrong way (confused source/destination drives), only God can help you get your data back.
