My external hard drive recently would not go through or show on My Computer anymore even though it is recognized on my laptop. I have some important data in there (video shootings) that needs to be retrieved.

If you have a WD5000AAVS-00ZTB0 that was done in Jan 18, 2008 or anything close to the date, please contact me. I think the logic board is messed up.

Thanks so much!!

Confused.
If hdd identifies in your laptop but not in other machine, then it is obviously NOT a pcb problem.

If hdd identifies in your laptop and you need the data off it, why don't you connect hdd to your laptop and copy files?

It doesn't show up in My Computer or in other laptops/computers. I honestly don't know anything much about external hard drives except how to use it normally.

When I said that it was recognized, I meant that the usb reader can tell that I have plugged it in but the item is not shown to be what it is.

I gave it to a computer man who said that the logic board is the problem because he checked it with his friend who said the little black chip got burned underneath when he checked with his machine.

I recently just bought a logic board to try to see if it would work, and it didn't even turn on normally or shown in the usb that we just plugged it in. I wonder if I should just buy another acomdata external hard drive or should I try to buy a Western digital wd5000aavs- 00ztb0. does the DCM need to be the same? That's the actual thing that the case is encased around. This is the model: http://acomdata.com/p-320-puredrive-500 ... drive.aspx

This is the logic board I bought to try to replace it:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/110746197600?ss ... 1475wt_952

Maybe it's because I bought it from a HDD failed sectors test???

What do you guys think?
Tammy

You'd have to be VERY lucky to find another PCB to work directly with your drive, as it contains very specific adaptive data programmed into the ROM.

Your PCB does not have an external ROM so it requires a new PCB to be programmed with the required data which is obtainable from a copy on the platters.

This is not DIY so you need to go to a pro for this one. Shouldn't be expensive at this stage.

Where do you recommend that I would go pro with this or what's a good company?? I did get a quote from a company that would do it for $560 guaranteed. is that a good price? thanks! by the way, what's PCB and DIY?

Your board's Marvel MCU chip (88i6745-TFJ1) is afflicted with a fault that mimics head or media problems. That said, where are the burn marks that you wrote about?

BTW, PCB = Printed Circuit Board, and DIY = Do It Yourself.

I don't see it either. The guy said that it's underneath the chip and we cannot see it... The computer guy just said that I need to buy a logic board that has the same model WD5000AAVS-00ZTB0 and it should work. So I'm still trying to look for another hard drive that has the same model that works and doesn't have a failed hdd sectors test or something. Do you think I should still through the guy's suggestion or should i just give it to a specialist? It would save me at least $200 if i buy the same model instead of going to the data recovery person.

The "computer guy" is just a computer guy. He's wrong. As already mentioned, you will need to be very lucky for a straight board swap to work.

Your board has a vacant location at U12. This means that the Marvell MCU contains the "adaptive" information that needs to be transferred to your replacement PCB. Assuming that your problem can be fixed with a board swap, then you will need to find a board supplier who includes a firmware transfer service. Such a service should cost no more than US$10 - $20. Some also do it for free.

That said, you could try cloning your drive, sector-by-sector, with a multipass utility such as ddrescue or dd_rescue. It clones the "easy" sectors on the first pass and the difficult ones on subsequent passes.
