Hello I hav a WD wd5000bmvv...it lights up but does not spin. Data recovery place there's a mechanical problem but chargers too much. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do?

I guess this is a WD My Passport drive. Remote diagnosis of the drive may not be possible, but if you answer these questions, then it might be easier for readers to understand your situation:

What exactly did the "data recovery place" say was the problem?

How much was their quote?

What happened to cause this problem e.g. was the drive knocked or dropped etc.?

I guess you want to recover the data, and not just fix the disk without caring about the data (but you didn't actually say this). If so, how important is the data on this disk to you?

Does the drive make any sounds at all (perhaps quiet ones), when you plug it in?

I didn't drop or physically drop. Does not make any noise. And is recognizable. Data recoverys quote is 2000$.

What do you mean its recognizable? You see that drive in BIOS or disk management with correct size?

Many users at WD's forums are reporting "mechanical" problems with the micro-USB connector. Obviously the drive is getting power, but it may be that there is a break at one of the Data+ or Data- pins.

Otherwise let's see the component side of the board.

Data recovery said there was a mechanical problem and has to go into a clean room. And have to pay. I decided to not go that route and just doing research in other solutions.

That's quite a vague description, but if their diagnosis is correct (that clean room work is needed) then it's not a PCB problem and no realistic chance for you to do DIY.

Of course this depends on whether their diagnosis is correct - if they are a reputable company, then I see no reason to disbelieve them, especially since they have actually seen / tested this drive, and none of us have!
