Hi Guys,

I'm hoping someone could help me. I have an external hard drive (Samsung HM502JX) that appears to 'boot up' in that i can hear spinning and a blue LED appears. However it does not appear in My Computer and Windows gives me the following error in device manager:

Unknown Device: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

This is the output from Microsoft's USB Device Viewer:

---===>Device Information<===---

ConnectionStatus: FailedEnumeration
Current Config Value: 0x00 -> Device Bus Speed: Low
Device Address: 0x00
Open Pipes: 0
*!*ERROR: No open pipes!

===>Device Descriptor<===
*!*ERROR: bLength of 0 incorrect, should be 18
bLength: 0x00
bDescriptorType: 0x00
bcdUSB: 0x0000
bDeviceClass: 0x00
*!*ERROR: Device enumeration failure

I also downloaded Samsung's ESWIN S.M.A.R.T Utility but does pick the HDD up (presumably because Windows dont see it)

Any help with recovering data from it would be massively appreciated! :-)

J

Because there is USB interface only. And the conteroler is JMxxxx not INIC-xxxx.

I think there maybe firmware issue, the friend should send it to a pro.
Or maybe connect wires form USB to SATA to test.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll take it to a data recovery firm.

There should be an 8-pin EEPROM IC near the JMicron bridge chip. If you short the EEPROM's data or clock pin to ground while powering up the drive, then the external device should identify itself with JMicron's Vendor and Product ID. If it does not, then something is wrong with the bridge or the USB connector. In fact there are numerous reports of physical connection problems at WD's forums, so I would expect that Samsung drives may be similarly affected.
