Hi All,

My hard drive recently stopped working with my PC giving the error that the hard drive did not exist. I've never heard the hard drive make any noises before so I suspected something electrical was wrong. Upon inspecting the PCB, I noticed the fuse was blown so I shorted across these pads and got power to the hard drive. However, the drive does not spin but instead tries to get going and faintly clicks each time. I do not believe there is any mechanical problem with the drive. I recently purchased a new PCB that had the same model number, part number, and pcb number as that one I have (Model MHZ2320BH G2, PN CA07018-B31800C1,
PCB CA21344-B71X). However, with the new PCB, I get similar startup issue some some faint beeps too amongst the clicking. Can someone please help me clarify what might be wrong? Also, can anyone please help me identify the ROM so I could try transferring it from the old PCB to the donor PCB? fzabkar, I hope your experience with Fujitsu drives can help me out here.

Thank you!

Sounds like stiction to me, heads stuck to the platter. Assuming you mean that with the replacement PCB the platters cannot be heard or felt to spin up.

You have three choices as I see it.

1. If your data is valuable then take to a pro.
2. If you don't care about your data then you can try "percussive maintenance" AT YOUR RISK
3. As above but try and unstick the heads yourself.

Please be warned that options 2 & 3 are VERY RISKY and could very well result in your data being lost forever.

With the replacement PCB, I can hear the drive try to start up with faint clicks everytime it starts. It seems to try harder when it clicks, spins for a little, beeps, then repeats the process. Is there a way to swap the ROM on this board? Can someone please help me identify it in the attached picture? Obviously the fuse blew on the original board so there could be more problems with the original board which is why it is not working with a replaced fuse.

Have you tried the original PCB again? Perhaps there was a stiction fault which has fixed itself?

As for a ROM, the MCU appears to have internal flash memory. There looks to be a vacant 8-pin spot in the top RH corner of the PCB that may be reserved for an external flash memory. (The spot to the left of it appears to be allocated to a tri-axis accelerometer for G-force protection.)

BTW I have very little experience with modern hard drives in general. My experience is in component level electronics.

ROM is internal in MCU on this model.

Thanks guys. Lucky for me, I tried the hard drive with the new PCB and hooked it up to the computer and everything works normally!! The old PCB is still bad and something probably is blown on the board.

Interestingly enough, I was using an external SATA to USB hookup and that's what led me to believe the new PCB wasn't working either.

For everyone else who might have a similar problem, I suspected the PCB from the beginning due to the drive not spinning when the computer was turned on. Also, I had never heard any noises from it in the past. Lastly, I ordered my donor PCB from www.hddsupplier.com.

Thanks again!
