Hi,

try to use an acronis usb boot key (the trial version allow to to create it)

Boot with it and see if it can see you drive and your files (select backup my file and my drive option), if it is ok just backup your files on another drive.

if you intend to fix your drive with softwares you should before clone your drive and work on the cloned drive.

It takes more than FW tools to recover data.

You need to fix it before you can hope to access your data. But knowing "some mainstream stuff about hard disks" won't be enough.

There are some freeware utilities that may help you see at least some of your firmware modules, but you will need some competence to use them.

http://nazyura.newmail.ru/000006.htm

Also see the following thread:
wdc-wd5000abys-01tna0-re2-needs-recovered-t21632-20.html

The OP in that thread was able to rebuild his damaged firmware (MODs 32 and 34) using an MHDD script.

No the Data Compass can not do this for you at all. The tool was not designed to set a virtual head. What the data compass does is only allow you to try and start the HDD using head primary 0 or head secondary 1. It can not do as you have explained here at all. Who ever told you this one is wrong and it will not work in your case.

Your HDD is reporting on factory alais and with 0 LBA. This can not help you out at all on this one. You have some mods or tracks errors in this drive that have to be fixed in order to fix your problem. You can not go and just replace FW at will if you have no idea what you are doing. You can cause more damage than good if you do not know how to match compatable FW and what mods can be changed or fixed. No mater what you are reading here in this thread about this program or that can do the job for you it can not. Why becasue you have no idea what is wrong with your drive in the first place and if you follow these suggestions by a person who has never used this program or done this work then you do more damage to your HDD.

It is not a DIY job this one sorry. The more you screw around with this the less of a chance you have to fix it now. I know for a fact that as it stand right now the price should not be that expensive to fix this drive. But if you go in and try these program and start to replace FW on this by some suggestions here on this thread you loose your chance of seeing your data again in some cases.

It is your drive and your data and if you want to follow these people who have no idea what they are talking about except what they have read on this forum then please continue on with this one. If you want to get back your data then I would suggest that you stop now and go to see a real recovery center and let them fix the problems for you on your drive and get back your data for you.

Good luck if you follow these suggestions and buy all these progam. When you are done with this you have spent how much money and still no data. In the end you could of taken that money you invested in a progam that you will never use again and pay a pro to do this for you and you will have somthing to show for your money. If you buy all these progam which I am sure the person who suggested them to you does not even own himself but wants to have you buy them. Now you have them what to do with them and how to use them. I am sure he can not help you out on this one and now you have spent how much 80 bucks on one and 150 bucks on another one. For another 100 bucks you could more than likely have back your data and not be stuck with progam you have no idea how to use and work with. Your money your data your choice.

All those utilities I alluded to only read the various firmware modules and tracks. They will not touch your data. In any case, if you are unable to follow those procedures, then you will have no chance at a DIY repair, assuming it is possible.

BTW, if a drive is busy, then it won't be able to report 0 LBAs or identify itself with a model number. I'd ask "one guy" to clarify his diagnosis.

I see what you have said here. Then read again that drive reports on busy and can read all heads. This guy is wrong. If you can read WD 800 80GB with 0 MB disk space this is not your case. You have a problem with mods or tracks inside the HDD SA that need fixing. This guy can not do this with the Data Compass. I know for a fact it can not work like he said to you on this one. Sorry it is not possible.

I have the data compass and wrote the manual on this one. I know what that tool can do and not do and what he is saying is not right. There is one new section in the data compass to work with royl drives that will allow or attempt the HDD to read from one head only head 0 or 1. That means primary or secondary head nothing else.

If he says the drive is busy and can not report on ready then this will never work. All Royl series HDD that have the three clicks spin down report on ready and then he can try with this feature in the DC to read from head 0 or 1. Since your drive reports WD 800 with 80GB 0 MB your problem is not for this. It is different your problem and can not be fixed by trying to read your HDD by head 0 or head 1. I would not trust him on this one he does not know what is wrong with your HDD by what you have said here.

Where are you located???? I mean really located!! Let us know and we can tell you who to take your drive to so you can get it repaired correctly.

Wow this one is new an online diagnosis is free. Never tried to do an online diagnosis before. When a drive has problems such as his does it is obvious what is wrong with it and we have told him already what is wrong. He has problems in his mods and tracks and that is why his HDD is reporting as it is. He is in Egypt and there is some good WD DR people in Egypt that can do this for him. He is bertter off to go to their shop with his HDD and have them look at this one. I am sure the price will be cheapter for him than to buy all these programs and do all this himself when he does not understand what is wrong with the HDD now. There are places in the world that prices vary. I think you are under the impression that all DR shops will start to charge from 500 dollars and on up for their work. The one reason head swaps are so expensive is the price for donor parts. At times it takes more than one head to get off data and when you have to buy all the donor parts that is included in the price of recovery work. I know the person in Egypt who does this work and know for a fact that prices there are much less than other places that do the same work. Why becasue people can not pay for the work and so prices reflect the area people live in.
