You won't mark them as bad with MHDD as you wish : it's just cosmetic.
If the drive is intended for storage of stuff with NO importance at all i.e. temporary download or media storage like movies of no importance etc. (in a nutshell : in case of data loss the only effective loss is time to download it / fill it again) then the answer may be " uh... yes... try".
A more effective solution would be finding someone in your area who can professionally refurbish it for few $ / EUR (assuming they have the gear and know what to do) , in this case you can squeeze out some life (years maybe) from the disk. I could have been of help but I'm at the opposite corner of this world :(

P.S. don't make the disk run hot for NO reason. I mean 40 deg C is the limit.

when you say that there's a way to refurbish it do you mean it's a complicated software procedure or do I also need specific hardware as well? If it's only software, can you please name them so I can look them up?

It's only an HD that is rarely turned on and now that it's problematic it will most possibly stay inactive after copying back the files until a new one is bought. The files in there are indeed downloads of minor importance like you described above.

Oh, and something else, about what you said on HD temperature: is it possible that high temps cause physical faults? Problem is, I live in southern Greece and summer temperatures go well above 30C for months...

No unfortunately it's pure HW solution out of reach of end users.
