I found this thread when googling about the HDD that was found in my in-laws Lacie HDD. It all of a sudden stopped working. I tried putting the hitachi drive into another external hdd box to see if it was the boxes power supply that was the problem but it was not.

I have rung around a few computer repair companies to see what I can try next but many were unable to help saying I will have to pay a data recovery company up to $2000 to get the data extracted. One guy said I could try finding an identical hdd and replacing the board on it as a last ditch effort.

I have looked at the board and I cannot find anything specifically burnt looking/shorted out on it. I can get my hands on a multimeter if anyone is able to guide me as to what I should be testing to see if I can temporarily fix the board itself. i'm not necessarily looking to save the hdd, I just really need to get the data off it for the in-laws (lots of photos from their trips around Australia and family baby pictures). If not, how much would a PCB be and is it as simple as unscrewing the old board and putting a new board on?

Cheers in advance

Yvonne

First you need to specify drive's behaviour when your attempt to power it up. Does it spin? Does it produce knocking (or other weird) noises? Is it completely dead?

If the drive is completely dead when you power it on, then, to start with, the pcb is dead. There could be more problems to the drive apart from the dead pcb but you should start from there.

If the drive spins up and produces knocking sounds or anything like that, then there is internal damage to the drive and there is nothing you can do except from consulting a pro.

It needs to be accurately diagnosed to tell. If problem with pcb only, then $2000 is ridiculous. Give drive to a reputable DR company to have it diagnosed and have a quote for data recovery.

Otherwise, you can go DIY but you will have to accept risks of DIY. Read other threads about it.
I am pretty sure other people will guide you as to how to measure the pcb and pinpoint problem (not really my thing). I have to repeat though, if you care about the data, go the safe way and consult a DR company. If only pcb problem, then it wouldn't be that costly.

Good luck.

PS. No, just swapping pcb would not help.

I think you should start a new thread in the Hard Drive Market section of this forum.

If the SATA data connector is OK, and if the damage is restricted to the SATA power connector, then the simplest, safest, and cheapest solution would be to hardwire a legacy 4-pin Molex power connector to the +12V and +5V pins on the PCB. This avoids the need to transfer the NVRAM chip.

Hi,

I'm trying to help a friend.
The problem. He had a HDT721010SLA360 in external hdd box and lost a ac adapter (12V), so got other random one and plugged in (19V) and fried the disk. If I put hdd into another hdd encloser, or plug directly to pc, it won't boot up (no leds are working). I believe there is a short circuit in hdd pcb.
We need to access the information in that disk, it's very important.
So we ordering exactly the same hdd, same revision, same release date, close serial number.
Will it work if I transfer new pcb to old disk? Or I need additionally transfer the NVRAM or something?
Basically did anyone tried that, and how it went?
Or it's possible to fix the pcb by replacing some fuse or diode?

Any help would be appreciated.

No, a fuse is in series with the supply. A TVS diode is in parallel with it.

Replacing the diode with a wire would make about as much sense as placing a spanner between the terminals of your car's battery.

In short, just remove the diode and hope for the best.

hi. I got external hdd lacie 1tb with Hitachi inside. by mistake I put adaptor 19v and burn something. I took apart external hdd and recognize on the motherboard burnt small black things ( just little bit) I think is tvs diode, so first question is what can I do to repair it and if anyone know where can I buy new motherboard ( try to find but cant).
Another thing is - I tried connect that hard drive directly to pc but my computer doesn't start. nothing happened, quiet. ... disconnect hdd pc start normally. on the pcb board looks ok, no signs of burn or short circus. ... What you think is this, is pcb or hdd inside or maybe something wrong with connection.
If is PCB I would prefer to change it then remove tvs diode so could someone tell me what should I do to replace it. enough only new PCB or need to do something else. ???? nvram ??? how to do that ??? And what about to replace only TVS diode is it difficult to do that ?
Please help. I know there was few times similar question but always answer is remove TVS Diode not exactly what people asking for.

Then replace the TVS diode.

thanks for link, very helpful.
I made few tests so please for comments and help, thats results :

L14 meter on COM + VOm = jump to 26 than finish and stay on 0.02.
L14 test diode sound (what means good condition) showing 0.00
LS3 meter on COM + VOm = jump to 26 than finish and stay on 0.02.
LS3 test diode sound (what means good condition) showing 0.00

....but when you see L14 than on the lest LS3 next is something (what is this ) =
meter on COM +VOm = no reaction, stay on 1. and test diode = about 580.

please for help and advise what could I do nest to test PCB to find what is wrong, thanks.

peter111, the problem is L14. Remove it or replace it. See my FAQ for suitable substitutes.

It appears that all are suitable. Just be sure you don't buy 3000 of them. :-)

I measured and there is a C17 and C18 that it didn't give me a number on the meter. I don't know what they're for.

danidiomas, I respectfully suggest that you do not have the skill to fix your drive. Ask your technician to swap the NVRAM, but tell him to be careful not to damage it in the process. Otherwise ask your technician to watch this thread (or your other thread).

Wise move not a good idea that you do this one yourself. Better to have somene do it for you. Maybe you can ask Franc he knows how to do this one and I am sure he would be willing to help out on this one. Just some postage and send it to AU and I am sure you will get it fixed.
