It looks like my PCB died on my Maxtor 6L200M0. (Code: BANC1E00, LBA: 398297088, SN: L40C29YH)
Tried to use MHDD but got the error related to ATA password...
Any help with it?

Is it any other ways (inexpensive!) to recover the data from it?

Thanks in advance!

If the PCB died on the Maxtor then you have no drive spinning at all. Please be a little more clear why you think your PCB died on you.

If you have used MHDD then that means you do not have a PCB problem on this one. If what you are saying is true then you have a locked HDD with a password on it.

Give somre more details of all this and add a little here so we can understand it a little more.

Have you tried to swap out PCB, What testing have you done and so forth this can help a little more to understand the complete problem on this one

Iorana, thanks for answer.
I install my Maxtor into my second PC and smell small smoke... I thing there was a power supply problem or something like this...Anyway, after it happened I lost it from BIOS...that's why I start to think that PCB died...Moreover on datacent.com they said that Maxtors are very vulnerable to the power surges and bad power supply...
OK, I tried to use MHDD to save my data but it cannot fins the controllers with the default configuration and said that there is an error with ATA password...
Any idea how to unlock it?

"DIED" = the disk is locked, it seems.

MHDD won't help anyway. About the rest, no comment.

OK, got you. There are 2 similar HD drive on the e-bay now:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/380443397140?ss ... 1423.l2649
http://www.ebay.com/itm/110887681016?ss ... 1438.l2649

Will it work if I just use its PCB? What the level of numbers similarity will I have to look for to make the PCB works on my HD? I mean is it have to be 100% identical with (Model#, Code#, SN#, PCB#) or what is important and what is not?
Thanks.

OK does the HDD spin up at all. You say can not see it in BIOS. Well if drive can not be seen then MHDD can not do much for it at all. You can search and check TVS here on the forum and find out if there is a short in the 12V or 5V TVS. If there is remove the one bad. After put it on to a machine that has a good PS on it and get off your data. Otherwise you will need to replace the PCB on this one to do this.

But it can not be both. PCB died and ATA PW lock. It has to be one or the other sorry.

Sorry , Ann, but CAN be. Firmware fault, for example.

(I didn't read "PCB died" anyway).

He says it is not seen in BIOS after smelling smoke. He said he put it in another PC and might of had a PS issue but he smelled smoke. He can test his TVS now and see if this is the problem but if he puts it back in the same PC with same PS then he will fry more on it than just the TVS and if removed then no more protections at all.

You are right FW fault will do this one but like you said PCB died anyway. That is why I said what I did to him that he should try this one and might be safer to find a new PCB for him on this one. Not sure if he can repair the PCB that he has or knows how to do this one. I know he can remove the TVS but then no protection and does not have proper tools to help him out in getting off data if TVS are removed.

I don't know if this is another UNREAL thread (someone will have a look at it...)

Anyway , summing up :

1) If the disk "seems" locked IT IS NOT the PCB.
2) If the PCB WAS died, unless you find the EXACT replacement (many things MUST match) the disk WON'T WORK or will act weird. Was this your case ?
Note : even if you find the "exact" PCB it still cannot work because of ... something else.
3) If there is a password problem, MHDD won't help UNLESS you know the password.
Especially if the disk has been used in non-standard environment or the PW were changed.

Regarding on UNLOCK and SECURITY, see for example :

unknown-ata-password-seagate-st3500312cs-t22093.html#p155777

The rest, as the circumstances are (intentionally ? ) unclear , is just guesswork and this is completely useless.
