Hi, I burn my pcb logic card of a Toshiba 2.5 HDD, I almost sure of that because I connected the power in the wrong way, I´m thinking on doing a swap, but first I would like to try changing or bypassing the fuse, can you help me identifying it.
I think the fuse is the one marked in a red circle (E2), but what about the 4 components marked in the yellow circle? I have doubt because there are inmediatly after the power connection.

Image

Thanks in advance for any help.

Best regards.

P.S. Sorry for my english

Hi Genius Unknown and others smart friends , I have damaged my Toshiba MK4036GACE HDD2E02 car navigation NHDT-W53 2.5'' HDD during an experiment just to look the files in it :( . What have happened? Listen please, I mistakenly connected an ATA IDE Adaptor(2.5'' to 3.5'') to the HDD to Bottom 22 pins instead of to all 44 pins while top 22 pins left empty (Please see picture). IDE adaptor's other 3.5'' side, flat ribbon cable and Power connector installed correctly. When I Powered on the PC, bios did not detect the HDD. So I shutdown the PC and examined connections which found incorrect as I mentioned above. So I doubted, HDD must be damaged cos of wrong connections. By looking at HDD n Adaptor, there was not any obvious damage on HDD pcb except a little trace burn on ATA IDE adaptor which I soldered (See Picture). After reconnecting again, HDD had no response (not detected, no viberation, complete silent). I unscrewed HDD pcb and looked on semiconductors and found no sign of damage or burn. I Just shorted one resistor but no avail (see picture). Tried many utilities, softwares including Toshiba Hard Disk Diagnostic to detect it but no avail, nothing dectected. Toshiba Hard Disk Diag only tells HDD is defective. Friends, I have read here few success stories by repairing fuse, resistors on pcb etc. Please guide me with you expertise and opinions, Is there any jumper, resistor or fuse to look for to repair the pcb to give life to HDD and save my Expensive AV Multinavigation System.

There is a chance your HDD is fine. Did you replace the adaptor? If it won't work with new adaptor, then you need to repair/replace the pcb, but I would start with the converter.

SALIM, Sallam Salim Sahib, Sorry I could not reply you soon cos I was busy. Me from Gujranwala and where you are from? Please look my post here and find any solution for me. Nothwind a member here, suggests me to check the IDE Adaptor which I did by using it with another spare HDD but its fine and operational. Please tell, is there any fuse on the pcb to look for or anything else? take care

@zulfiqaralichaudry, measure the voltage at the L106 coil near the motor terminals.

fzabkar,
Thx fzabkar you came out from moon as an angel. Before this, I read a lot success stories from you here on HDD GURUS AND WDC websites so I wished somehow, I could in contact with you. Atlast, you arrived and solution worked. Again thx. Now how suggestions worked. Accoding to your instructions, I checked voltage at L106 coil. No voltage there at all. I also checked D9 which found dead. I replaced it with another one from a old pc MB lying arround . Now :D , HDD is operational. But my navigation unit NHDT-W53 is not booting. Hope, any solution comeup from somewhere. See picture please. Takecare

Exactly how did you diagnose that the original D9 was "dead"?

Exactly how did you decide that the replacement diode from your old PC MB, is a suitable replacement for the original D9? Remember, not all diodes are the same...

Exactly what tests did you do, with what results, to decide that the HDD is "operational"? I suspect that you don't mean the disk is operational, and instead perhaps you just mean that the disk now spins - but without further accurate information from you, I'm just guessing...

L106 and D9 are irrelevant.

I am extremely surprised at your outcome.

The purpose of my question was not to suggest that either of those components may have been faulty, I was merely trying to determine whether the motor controller was generating the onboard power supplies. If so, then I would have suspected the MCU.

When you initially stated that there was no voltage at the coil, my immediate thought was that either the motor controller was dead, or that it was not getting its +5V supply. Your subsequent information is therefore very puzzling.

BTW, D9, L106 and the adjacent MOSFET (?) constitute a DC-DC converter, probably supplying the Vcore voltage to the MCU.

Vulcan, unknown, fzabkar,
First of all, I am a lawyer not an electronics engineer. What I do with electronics gadgets is always based on hit and trial method and little bit my science subjects studies. So please be humble and patient with me. Moreover, That's why, I am here seeking gurus's help.
Now, I explain what I did do with the HDD? As I mentioned in my previous post, HDD gone bad completely like dead silent, no spins, no detection in bios, nacard at all, Fingers Crossed :?. Few days later, by guessing, I shorted one resistor at the top near L3(may be that resistor was fine). After it, checked the HDD with pc via adaptor, no positive result. A couple of days ago, I couraged to play arround with the pcb to find out voltage at L106 inductor. For this, I borrowed a multimeter from a friend and put a prob at one side terminal of L106 other on negative pole. There was not any voltage. So, I followed the trace which led me to the Diode D9. I desoldered that Diode, Diagnosed it with multimeter by turning the knob at diode mode. Diode was not conducting from either side(not even voltage goes across it in resistance mode). I persumed diode must conduct from one end to other and not in reverse direction.
Then I started to search a same type of diode in my back shed. There, I found a very similar, same size diode from a an old pc MB. Solder it back on pcb in correct polarity (order). After assembling hdd pcb. I connected HDD to pc. Turned on PC. It starts spining, appeared in bios, installed hdd driver in windows auto, appeared in device manager, partitions also appeared in my computer and in disk management.
Further, I CLONED A HDD from it. Then deleted actuall hdd partitions. Repartitioned it again (Just a try). Again cloned it from CLONED HDD at first place. No problem whatsoever except it stopped booting the car navigation system (maybe, there were boot codes in it which has not been transfered while cloning HDD at first place).
Disclaimer; I told exactly what I did and experience with the HDD. It's a success story for me. May be, a trick worked here somehow, not sure.
Thx for all of you being with me. takecare

Thanks for this story.

OK, since this is already a success for you, I'll stop asking any questions. :)
