I'm having a discussion with an associate of mine on how to ship a hard drive. He feels that if you wrap a hard drive with one layer of 1/2" thick bubble wrap and put it in an envelope it should be fine. I think the hard drive should be placed in a box with a few inches of packing material on each side. Thanks for any opinions on this. Also, does it make a difference if it's an older or newer hard drive? Desktop or laptop?

Hard drives have various architectures and poor packaging and shipping can cause media damage beyond repair.

So, the best way to package a hard drive is as follows:
1) place drive in an anti-static bag
2) wrap drive up in foam, bubble wrap, or insert in a specifically designed plastic enclosure to protect from impact during shipping. Thickness should more than 1/2 an inch.
3) very important - however the drive is placed in the box, ensure there is no play room between the drive and the walls of the box. Not good if the drive is moving around loosely in the box. So, put as much bubble wrap as you need, compensate with foam peanuts, newspaper, etc.
4) place "fragile" signs on the box. Keep in mind that the shipping carriers do not know what is in the package, nor do they care much, so expect your drive to encounter some banging/throwing/tossing/dropping along the way.

As an alternative, can always call a reputable data recovery company and ask for instructions. They should have them prepared as part of their case submitting process.
