Been away for a while so firstly apologies for not getting back to my PM's.

I do have an issue after carrying out a head swap on a Hitachi 2.5" and was hoping for some insight. Details are as follows.

Original:
HDD: 5K250-250
Model: HTS542525K9SA00
MLC: DA2010
Jun-08

Donor:
HDD: 5K250-250
Model: HTS542525K9SA00
MLC: DA2010
Apr-08

After replacing the heads the drive now clicks a few times then comes ready in PC3K (original PCB being used)

However the HHD is not detected and the family cannot be identified. Then the "ID is not read appears." in PC3K

Should I be doing something else or does it look like my headswap has failed and requires another.

Advice appreciated. TIA.

Re-Read The manual for PC3k and it appears that after manually selecting the HDD family the SA cannot be read. So Head swap appears to have been a failure.

More practice required.

For Hitachi's in PC3K you need to manually select the family.

You tried adjusting map in NVRAM, maybe you have a bad surface?

Try placing heads back to donor, if donor is still good then your process is good and maybe you have some other issue like compatibility or maybe even problem is elsewhere.

If place heads back to donor and donor does not work, wither heads are killed by bad surface at patient or process is wrong.

Removed heads and found lower to be damaged, on close inspection underside of platter surface is marked in various areas.

Learning curve on checking this next time prior to using a donor drive. :-/
