Hi all,

Have the above drive sent to me from lady who lives in an area with short, frequent power cuts.

I used another incompatible PCB for power only. Drive showed signs of stiction. Opened drive and resolved stiction. Power only applied with incompatible board and drive spins.

The drive gives a very faint tick or two then nothing. The young lady has sent to a TV Repair shop and looks like they have replaced a capacitor and removed the two Diodes which had probably blown anyway.

I would appreciate any assistance in what, and how to test to determine if this board can be repaired.

Alternatively my research shows that removing the 8pin chip and transplanting to a donor board would be possible.

Probably the best is to get a donor PCB and swap ROM.

Generally a single 'click' before reaching DRDY could be a ROM/NVRAM mismatch or some SA related error. does it reach DRDY?



You do not need to save this board, just the NVRAM. If you can read it using a programmer or even with PC3000 in Auto Spin Disable, you can usually verify if its native.



This is what I would do, always use a board I know is good. You should be aware that ROM is internal (I believe) so you need to ensure your donor PCB is compatible, with same ROM. Some models (unsure about SLA without checking it) have ROM externally that can be changed, otherwise you need to source a good part based on information like PN.

Drive does not reach ready state in PC3k.

I shall endevour to source a donor PCB and keep you abreast of how this one goes after chip swap.
