hi,

I have an old 80 Gb WD Caviar.recently I tried to make a 3.5" to 2.5" IDE cable to connect my 80Gb hard drive to my old laptop instead of it's own 2.5" hard drive.I think I connected the pins in reverse,I may have connected pins 41 to 44 which are for power of 2.5" hard drive to pins 1 - 4 of 80Gb hard drive which are I think for data and reset,... . now when I connect my 80Gb hard drive through usb to my new laptop,it isn't working (but motor works just fine). So I have a question, is my hard drive fixable or it's beyond repair ? :(

thanks in advance .

Can you clarify this by describing what the drive does in more detailed? For example, describe drive sound after powering on, what happens once connecting to PC, etc.

when I power it on ,it's motor begin to work ,the sound is normal(same as it was before) .after that I can hear sound of the heads trying to read,it goes something like: tr....tr....tr.... and it repeats ,like it can't find anything to read(or something like that).
I connect my drive with a Ide to usb cable, and when I connect it windows doesn't find out about this device being connected,it doesn't even show the message of "device unrecognizable" !
also my hard begins to getting warmer faster than usual.

Ok, high chance of hardware failure. Which kind? Not 100% sure as more advanced tests are necessary to rule out problems.
What is the history on this drive?
Why do you think it is no longer working? Or what do you think caused the failure?

Did you connect external power (both 5V and 12V) to the hard drive? If not, laptop supply only 5V power, so no wonder 3.5" hard drive won't work.

Connect it to PC and see it is damaged or still working.

well my drive had couple of bad sectors but I managed to partition my drive so that the bad sectors are unformated and as a result not being used.drive worked fine,I used it as backup with the help of my IDE to USB cable.
I think the main reason that it's not working is because I connected it wrongly. For IDE drive to work I guess each pin from 1 to 40 should be connected to the same pin on laptop, but I connected it in reverse ,meaning I connected laptops hard power to hard drives data pins.
when I connect this drive with IDE to usb cable widows don't even find out something is connected, considering this and the fact that it's motor works fine,I think problem is not mechanical, maybe its related to firmware or something that runs before firmware.

For IDE to USB cable I have an external power supply, but what I did was,I wanted my hard to work instead of laptop's hard so I had to power my 3.5" hard with laptop's 2.5" hard power supply witch is pins 40 to 44.but instead of connecting these pins to power socket of hard drive,I connected it to IDE (most likely data pins).
After I did this and it didn't work I connected my drive with IDE to USB cable,to find out if my drive got damaged or not, witch I found out it doesn't work.

Assuming previously was working and now doesn't, you have damaged PCB (or even preamp which is inside hard drive).
For Caviar range replacement of PCB is easy, no special tools required. Search net for PCB donor requirements, assuming data is important.
