With all due respect, you are asking Jon to share hard earned knowledge resulting from lots of research and time so you can apply his solutions to your clients media and make a quick buck?

In my opinion, you shouldnt even be working on clients media with the (obvious) limited knowledge you have. Do your clients know you have accepted their disks, no doubt with valuable and sentimental data store on them, with no realistic idea as to what to do? Are you sure you are properly diagnosing them, the right work is being done in the right environment and with the right tools? Are you aware of the risks associated with botched repairs?

The priority here should be the safety of your clients data, which I think is probably at risk....

I can't say it better than GTD4242 and other have said -- there are general rules for which there are exceptions. I ALREADY SHARED the criteria I use and it's not good enough for you? Very well then. In the future, I promise I won't give you info that will make you feel like I am withholding the most important details, showing "hard feelings", or whatever nonsense. Good luck.

Don't expect your hand held here. None of us got the benefit of that; why should anyone else?

Matching WD isn't a "general" ruleset, the ruleset changes between families, models, and all kinds of other factors.

I've found through years of experimentation and practice on old drives that you can have some really weird situations where two drives should not be compatible at all, but the heads end up working perfectly. I've highlighted a couple of cases on this site, and others I haven't. I will say that for the most part, everything I thought I knew about drive compatibility 10 years ago was completely thrown out the window.

.....and wat cases are they?? :?:

Accepting clients media, promising them a service you cant deliver, then coming to the forums to ask on advice to actually do the work is not a great business model.

I always fully support others who are interested in DR, but you need to be realistic with what you are capable of. If you are not capable or confident in something you need to outsource it to someone who can handle it, or return it to the customer for them to make a decision.
