Hi, I have a Samsung Story, with HDD Samsung HD204UI/VP4.

I connected the wrong power supply, and my USB to SATA adapter L1 blew. Now I see no damage to the HDD PCB. When I connect it to my PC SATA power and data cables, the hdd does not start at all, no head movement, no disk spinning.
I have a multimeter, so how would i check if there is a problem.

thank you very much. I found tons of info.

About testing the TVS, my PCB has 3 of them
037 LG | 037 KG | 031 B240

I tested them all, all have a reading.

037 LG gives me 0.08 at 200 OH
037 KG gives me -191.2, if i reverse the probes I get no change (1.0)
Using continuity check function all the TVS are working
I think those are the TVS, can someone double check for me?

continuity check function of another TVS-looking, I found that one of the pins (shown in red) does not conduct current, while all the other ones do.
It that the reason?? If so, removing it will fix the HDD, temporarly for copy? I have good PSU

disregard the last commend. Just found that is an empty gate
can't find any not working TVS. The spike blew one transitor on USB to SATA adapter, but the PCB on hdd still does not work

No - your PCB has only 2 TVS diodes. Those are the 2 diodes you can see near the SATA power connector. The other diode you have mentioned is part of a voltage regulator, and is not a TVS.

Some of your readings don't make sense to me but, if you accept the risks that you might cause further damage, I suggest you check again the +12V TVS.

thank you vulcan,

I checked again those 2.
Testing at 200 OHM at LG, putting the probes at each end I get 0.01-0.05 (I get the same reading if I put the probes together, without anything in the middle) At 2K OHM, I get 0 reading
Testing at 2K OHM at KG, I get a reading of 1.470.

So which one is the bad one??

I removed only the one that was reading 0.00, the drive won't start still. Do I have to replace it with the same 12V TVS model?
The other one reads now 1.382

IMHO it is high-risk for you to be doing this work, as it is clear to me from the questions you are asking, that you have not understood enough about TVS from whatever you have read. :( Also I have not yet seen you agree to accept responsibility for the consequences of your actions, in any of your previous comments. That is another reason why I have not told you what to do in my replies, and instead have only suggested things for you to check.

There are more checks that could be made using a multimeter, but since they would need power applied, I won't describe those (too high risk). Instead, one obvious candidate to check with power-off, is the 0 Ohm resistor next to the +12V TVS.

However it is also possible that the overvoltage on the +12V input has damaged more components on the PCB which you cannot repair and/or, if you are unlucky, it may have damaged the pre-amp inside the HDA. Therefore you must be prepared that you might not be able to fix this drive yourself - perhaps you will be lucky; perhaps not; perhaps you will cause more damage (and increase the cost, or decrease the liklihood of success, of a later professional recovery) in your attempts to repair it yourself... This is one of the risks of DIY attempts. I hope you understand my caution :)

Likely not directly. Use the search function for more info.

Are you trying to power up your drive inside its enclosure? If so, then it is possible that both are damaged. Check the zero ohm resistor adjacent to the 12V TVS diode (LG), as suggested by Vulcan, and then install the drive inside your computer, or inside another enclosure.

If you need to repair the USB-SATA bridge board, then let me know and I'll try to help you. You'll probably only need a couple of wire links.
